Minor Details: Games of 5/17

A good outing for Andrew Albers.  Cedar Rapids wins in extra innings.  Dare I say that D. J. Baxendale has nothing to learn in Fort Myers?

ROCHESTER 11, DURHAM 6 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Antoan Richardson was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Chris Colabello was 2-for-4 with a walk and two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Eric Fryer was 1-for-2 with two walks and a grand slam (his second homer of the season), scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Andrew Albers struck out six in 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up five hits and three walks.  Shairon Martis struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Vince Belnome was 3-for-5 with a double.  Cole Figueroa was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.

Key inning:  The second.  It was a scoreless tie.  Colabello doubled to start the inning, followed by a one-out walk to Eric Farris and an RBI single by Doug Bernier.  Joe Benson walked to load the bases.  Fryer then hit a grand slam to put the Red Wings up 5-0.  Rochester eventually built an 11-0 lead before the Bulls scored six in the eighth to make the final score look better.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 4, NEW BRITAIN 3 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 3-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Danny Santana was 2-for-5 with a double.  James Beresford was 2-for-5 and scored once.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer gave up two runs on five hits and no walks, striking out four in 5.1 innings.  A. J. Achter struck out one in a scoreless innings, giving up one walk.

Opposition star:  Kevin Pillar was 4-for-5 with a double and scored once.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The score was tied at three.  Pillar got an infield single with one out and stole second.  He took third on a single.  A strikeout made it two down, but an error on Santana allowed the winning run to score.

FORT MYERS 8, CHARLOTTE 0 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting stars:  Angel Morales was 3-for-4 with two triples, scoring once and driving in three.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer (his seventh) and scored twice.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched seven shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.  Matt Hauser pitched two perfect innings.

Opposition star:  Eliazer Suero struck out four in four innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and no walks.

Key inning:  The first.  Levi Michael led off the game with a double and Stephen Wickens reached on an error.  With two out, Vargas was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Morales unloaded them with a bases-clearing triple to give the Miracle an early 3-0 lead.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, KANE COUNTY 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  J. D. Williams was 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, and two triples, driving in two.  Jorge Polanco was 3-for-5 with a walk and two doubles, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Duffey pitched 7.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks.  David Hurlbut pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.  Manuel Soliman pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Lendy Castillo struck out four in five innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits and three walks.  Bijan Rademacher was 3-for-5 with a double and scored twice.  Jeimer Candelario was 2-for-5 with a double and scored once.

Key inning:  The twelfth.  The score was tied at three.  Polanco led off the inning with a walk and was bunted to second.  Travis Harrison grounded a single to left to bring in the winning run.
