Minor Details: Games of 5/18

Some good pitching gets wasted.  New Britain and Cedar Rapids get shut out.  The bats come alive for Fort Myers.

LEHIGH VALLEY 3, ROCHESTER 2 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Batting starJeff Clement was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Chris Herrmann was 1-for-2 with a walk and a double, scoring once.

Pitching starP. J. Walters struck out seven in seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Starter Raul Valdes struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Cesar Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Jermaine Mitchell was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Key inning:  The eighth.  With the score tied at two, Caleb Thielbar came in to pitch.  Mitchell led off with a single.  The next batter grounded to third, but Ray Olmedo threw the ball into right-center field, allowing Mitchell to come all the way around to score the go-ahead run.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 5, NEW BRITAIN 0 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting starDaniel Ortiz was 2-for-4.

Pitching starLogan Darnell struck out six in seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Sean Nolin struck out five in six innings, allowing four hits and two walks.  Sean Ochinko was 2-for-4 with a double.  Kevin Pillar was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Key inning:  The eighth.  The Fisher Cats led 1-0.  Bruce Pugh came in to pitch.  He walked the first batter and John Tolisano followed with a two-run homer.  After a Pillar single, the next two batters struck out, but Clint Robinson delivered an RBI double to make the score 4-0.

FORT MYERS 9, CHARLOTTE 2 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting starsMiguel Sano was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Matt Koch was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored once.

Pitching starsJason Wheeler gave up two runs on six hits and no walks in seven innings.  Adrian Salcedo struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition star:  Ryan Brett was 2-for-4.

Key inning:  The fourth.  The Miracle led 2-0.  With one out, Vargas walked and Koch singled.  A wild pitch put them on second and third and Angel Morales doubled them both home.  Morales stole third and scored on a single by Jonathan Murphy.

KANE COUNTY 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting starsTravis Harrison was 2-for-4.  Jhonatan Arias was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-2 with two walks.  The Kernels stranded ten runners and were 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Pitching starJose Berrios pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and no walks while striking out five.

Opposition stars:  Pierce Johnson struck out nine in six shutout innings, giving up six hits and a walk.  Oliver Zapata was 3-for-4 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in two.  Rock Shoulders (given name:  Roderick) was 2-for-4 with a home run.

Key inning:  The seventh.  In a scoreless tie, the first to Cougars went out.  Gioskar Amaya was hit by a pitch and stole second.  Zapata singled him home.  Following a pitching change, Pin-Chieh Chen doubled to send Zapata to third and an error brought him home to make the score 2-0.
