May 22, 2013: Long Night

I volunteered with a group from work to help chaperone a high school graduation night event last night. I didn't plan on staying long, but it's 3 AM as I write this. Whoops.

  1. Here you go Philo, presale for Vampire Weekend:

Thursday May 23rd starting at 10:00a. Password: VAMPIRES.

Concert is August 5th at the Orpheum

  2. On pace for 69-93. This is a bad stretch right now, but overall, this is about what I thought. They brought in three pitchers (Correia, Pelfrey, Worley) that I wasn't too excited about. Correia isn't any good, Pelfrey is trying to come back early from TJ, and Worley's last season performance was disconcerting. I expect all three to get hurt/suck. Then there's Diamond, who's had the clock strike midnight and ??? Cole Devries?

2014? 2015? The kids will be all right I think, but this club right now ain't much.

    1. I think Worley will be just fine, provided he is healthy. I will admit to wondering about his strikeout rate, but I still think it will return to league average, not Twins average.

      1. That's the big if. Is he healthy? Do you trust the Twins to get/keep him healthy?

      2. Check out the new Fangraphs article on Worley after today's game. It hadn't registered with me before just how much he relied on called strikes previously. As the article says, this doesn't account for all of his struggles, but as a battery Worley+Doumit is a discouraging combination.

    2. I don't know that I'd say Correia "isn't any good". He's nothing special, and certainly nowhere near as good as he was in April. I'd say he's a little below average, but not that much.

        1. Diamond is better than Correia. He's had a couple tough starts, but he'll be fine.

            1. Diamond is also left-handed and gets a ton of ground balls. That is Bill James' formula for a pitcher that can succeed with a low K rate (along with a low walk rate). Diamond is also a year younger than Blackburn was.

              1. I'm thrilled he's walking a dull razor edge instead of the razor-thin edge Blackburn had. Especially since his strikeout rate has dropped a batter per nine and the walk rate up half a batter per nine, the lefty and gets ground balls isn't enough to overcome that.

  3. Cc to Sean: some links on the mobile version appear to not be functioning from the main page. (. Lte on video / switch to desktop in specific)

    1. Hrm, can't say I'm surprised. I had been thinking about disabling it completely since the theme is old and the mobile switcher is a bit out-dated.

        1. not a big deal, but i've noticed some delayed loading times after the switch to HTTPS when using the desktop site from a mobile browser. if you reload it will eventually catch. it's uninconvenient enough that i'm not sure why i'm mentioning it.

          1. Does this happen at particular times or throughout the day? Of note would be if it happens during otherwise quiet times for the site. My guess is this is due to the limit of backend processes, though, come to think of it, it might be related to waiting on a lock for caching.

            1. it's pretty constant, as far as i can tell, and it's not a network issue as it happens full bars or none and with and without wireless connectivity. like i said though, just reload once or twice and it pops up just fine.

              1. Are you able to trigger it consistently when refreshing the same page? If so, then in Chrome* it should be easy to figure out the problem. To do so, right-click and select "Inspect Element"; click the "Network" tab; clear the display with the confusingly labeled clear button at the bottom, it looks like the universal no sign. Hover the cursor over the parts in the timeline to see a breakdown of where the time was spent. After waiting a while, I can see that the SSL part took 103 ms in this particular load. Note that you will want to clear after each refresh.

                * You can also figure it out in Firefox, but Chrome's display is prettier and provides more information. You can probably also do it in Safari, but I have no idea how.

                1. erm, and how do you do that on an iphone? sorry if i was unclear, this is only on my phone (and i only use the desktop site, so i couldn't tell you about the mobile version); computer connections work just fine.

                  1. I was going to ask, but it seemed like it you might have been talking about more than a phone.

Short answer: no. Long answer: probably, but now I really have no idea how to check. My guess is that the SSL negotiation just takes a bit/lot longer. My laptop took 100 ms and is probably ten times faster. I do know it's possible to have really slow SSL negotiation and by default some devices/browsers choose one of the slowest possible. I will look into forcing devices to choose a simpler cipher.

  4. I really hope the Wolves don't end up with Shabazz Muhamad. I only have one game to judge him upon but it was the NCAA tournament and he checked out.

    1. there will be so many land mines to avoid at that draft spot. This draft is gonna suck.

I wouldn't be surprised if Trey Burke gets drafted in the mid-teens and ends up being the best player in the draft.

        1. with a pretty large variance, I presume, since the ACTUAL average values bounce all over the friggin' place for picks 2-14.

        2. some absolutely great stuff in that article, sean. The Bluest of blue-chip teams in the data: the Lakers in 1988 (top 6 rotation had four guys drafted first overall, a 4th-overall, and a 23rd-overall). Next bluest is the '85 Lakers (three 1s, a 2, a 4 and a 60).

    1. I didn't know the major leagues had a seven-day DL. I thought it was fifteen in the majors and seven in the minors. Is the seven-day DL specifically for concussions or other special circumstances? Or did they change the rule and I just missed it?

      1. Yes, just for concussions and new a couple of years ago. A good rule, it encourages teams to get guys off the field when they've suffered a concussion.

        1. Yep. My understanding is that a doctor has to clear them for playing too. However, after reading about the Bulls doctors, that means less to me now.

    1. I like a good story as much as the next guy, and I'll be rooting for all of them, but I'd be happier if the Twins had fewer good stories and more good ballplayers.

      1. If his first game was any indication, I think Thielbar qualifies as a good ballplayer. Andrews and Colabello have put up very good numbers in AAA, so they may end up joining Thielbar.

        1. They may not be the worst players in the league, but I'll be surprised if any of them turn out to be above average. I'd love to be surprised, though.

    2. I read "The Twins are having success" and started laughing- at this point, I'm assuming you're trolling the commenting trolls, which is always fun.

      1. I think if you can get anything out of a guy you signed from an independent league, that qualifies as a success.

        1. Especially a guy like Colabello, who was undrafted. Albers and Thielbar were both drafted and then released after having a bad year in the low minors.

  5. Worley is being sent to AAA. No word yet on who comes up. Or, maybe that'll just be Deduno's spot.

    1. I would assume that's Deduno's spot. But they're going to need another starter for Monday, so who gets that start? Gibson starts Friday in Rochester, Deduno is scheduled to start Saturday. Should they just call them both up and push the rotation back a day?

        1. Not officially, but he's given up 14 earned runs in 7 innings in two Rochester starts.

          1. And even then, it's not that I never want to see De Vries pitch with the Twins again (I still think he'll make at least 8 starts with the Twins this year), I just think that it's time the Twins saw what Gibson can do.

            1. You don't like watching a 4.11 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 3.22 K/BB rate? That would look downright dominant next to the Twins' current starters. His 6.0 career K/9 would easily lead the current staff (pre-Deduno).

            2. The live journals will live in infamy. I'll take the over on 8 games pitched by Cole.

        2. I think his first start back was Monday and he needs to be in AAA for 10 days before being called up?

          1. Yes, but it wouldn't matter with how he's pitching so far. Walters and Albers deserve a shot first.

  6. Well, it looks like Yahoo! has given me the privilege of publishing my own content without sending it to an editor first. This is huge because I can now control when articles come out so they can be up first thing in the morning during the week. The article that was first published this morning was written Monday night, so I had two articles today competing for readers. I just published another one after the game, but I haven't seen it actually on Yahoo! yet, but when I went to submit it, the button said "Publish" instead of "Submit."

  7. if you have WGNAMerica, Francisco Liriano is pitching against the Cubs

FWIW, ESPN is offering up yet another Yankees game.

  8. David Ortiz stole 3rd base straight up....ok the 3rd base dude was playing off the base, but still/.
