Minor Details: Games of 6/12

Miguel Sano's AA debut doesn't go as planned.  The Miracle carries on despite promotions to New Britain.  Buxton and Berrios lead Cedar Rapids to victory.

ALTOONA 7, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN NEW BRITAIN (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored once.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Stolmy Pimentel pitched a complete game, allowing one run on three hits and six walks.  Jarek Cunningham was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Justin Howard was 3-for-3 and scored once.

Key inning:  The third.  The Curve broke up a scoreless tie with four runs.  A pair of leadoff singles led to runners being on second and third with two out.  Drew Maggi hit a two-run double.  Following a walk, Adam Dickerson hit another two-run double.  The runs came off Pat Dean, who gave up five runs on nine hits and a walk in 5.2 innings.

Other:  The starting shortstop for Altoona was Gift Ngoepe.  The starting left fielder was Drew Maggi.

ALTOONA 3, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN NEW BRITAIN (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Ex-Twin David Bromberg struck out twelve in six innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks.  Ali Solis was 2-for-3 with a double and scored once.

Key inning:  The third.  In the top of the inning, Oscar Tejada hit a two-run homer to put the Curve ahead 2-0.  In the bottom of the inning, singles by Danny Santana and Rosario and a walk to Josmil Pinto loaded the bases with none out.  Miguel Sano hit a sacrifice fly, but that was the only run the Rock Cats got.  New Britain did not get another baserunner until the seventh.

Prospect watch:  Trevor May struck out eight in 6.1 innings, but gave up three runs on five hits and three walks.  Sano, in his AA debut, was a combined 0-for-3 in the two games with a walk and two sacrifice flies.

FORT MYERS 6, DAYTONA 3 IN DAYTONA (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Aderlin Mejia was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.  Jonathan Murphy was 2-for-3.

Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and five walks.  Zach Jones struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up only a walk.

Opposition stars:  Chadd Krist was 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run.  Jorge Soler was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.

Key inning:  The fourth.  Trailing 2-0, the Miracle came up with a five-spot.  A walk, an error, and a single loaded the bases with none out.  Jhon Goncalves and Stephen Wickens hit consecutive two-run doubles to make it 4-2.  With two out, Mejia doubled to make it 5-2.

FORT MYERS 5, DAYTONA 4 IN DAYTONA (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Stephen Wickens was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his first), scoring twice.  Jairo Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching star:  Starter Matthew Summers struck out six in four shutout innings, giving up two hits and five walks.

Opposition stars:  John Andreoli was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Zeke DeVoss was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.

Key inning:  The sixth.  Leading 2-1, the Miracle added three.  Jhon Goncalves led off with a single, went to third on a Wickens single, and scored on a ground out.  With two down, Bryan Haar doubled to score Wickens and came around himself on a Mejia single.  In the bottom of the inning, a pair of walks and a single made it 5-2, and DeVoss' two-run homer in the seventh made it 5-4, but the tying run did not get past first base.

CEDAR RAPIDS 12, QUAD CITIES 4 IN QUAD CITIES

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 4-for-6 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Byron Buxton was 3-for-6 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run (his tenth), scoring twice.

Pitching star:  Jose Berrios struck out six in six innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and three walks.

Opposition star:  Jesse Wierzbicki was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.

Key inning:  The eighth.  In a 4-4 tie, the Kernels tallied eight times.  They batted thirteen men, getting six singles, three doubles,, and a walk.  Key hits included an RBI double by Tyler Grimes to put Cedar Rapids ahead and a two-run double by Buxton,  Polanco also contributed an RBI double.

DSL TWINS 6, DSL PADRES 5 AT DSL TWINS (CONCLUSION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting star:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Javier Vargas pitched four shutout innings of relief, giving up two hits and no walks.  Wilfredy Liranzo struck out seven in three innings, giving up one run on one hit and five walks.

Opposition star:  Derwin Pomare was 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in one.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Twins had overcome a 4-0 deficit to tie the game at four in the fifth.  In the seventh, the Twins got two without a hit.  A walk, an error, and a wild pitch scored the first run, and a sacrifice fly scored the second.

DSL TWINS 9, DSL PADRES 6 AT DSL TWINS (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Rainis Silva was 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in one.  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-1 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and driving in two.  Jet Hernandez was 0-for-0 with four walks, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Jhon Silva pitched two shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk.

Opposition star:  Jonas Lantigua was 2-for-4 with a double and a grand slam.

Key inning:  The third.  The Twins had overcome a 4-0 deficit to trail 4-3, then tallied five times in the third.  A pair of walks were followed by a Silva single to tie the score.  Another pair of walks forced in the go-ahead run.  A fielder's choice on which no one was retired scored another run, a hit batsman made it 7-4, and a sacrifice fly increased the lead to 8-4.  In all, the Twins scored five in the inning on one hit.
