My foot hurts. A lot. It's been sore now for 2 weeks. The ball of my foot. At first I thought it was just a bruise. Now I doubt that. It's a foot though, and those get beat up generally, so maybe it just hasn't had a chance to really heal? (Heel? Eh? Eh?).The pain has basically been enough that it has prevented me from any substantial workouts in the past 2 weeks. I've taken the bike out a couple times, which is doable, but my bike is in rough shape, and it does still hurt a bit when I'm working my way up hills (which comprise approximately 98% of Mankato) and need to lean into it a bit more.
That has really limited my fitness efforts, but my weight-loss efforts have continued with a focus on diet. The past week has seen 0 days above 2000 calories, except for maybe one, depending on how many calories were in the salads at the get-together. And even that day I was able to resist some temptations that I would have normally given in to. Yesterday ended up between 1300 and 1400 calories, and, more importantly, when stressed with my car breaking down, I didn't revert to my old stress-relievers of soda and sugary snacks. Even the temptation to do so was minimal, and easy to resist.
I'm not yet where I wanted to be, and it looks like I won't quite make my goal of 200 by the 3rd (202 this morning...) but given the difficulty in working out, I'm pretty happy that diet alone has been able to keep me moving (slowly) the right direction.
Most of my weight loss a few years ago was diet only. It was only after I lost some weight that I thought, "You know, maybe if I exercised, I could get into half-way decent shape for a late-middle-aged man."
Being active is pretty key to being healthy. It's more important, even, than body weight. Studies have shown that overweight sedentary people have the same risk of heart disease as sedentary people with a normal body weight. Same goes for active people. Most of the stuff you'll read about heart disease being linked to being overweight is a correlation, not causation.
I am taking a road trip on Thursday. I desire healthy snacks for the trip. To that end, I bought a metric crap-ton of shelling peas at the farmer's market today. I've never been a huge fan of peas, but I'm starting to be OK with them.
Now, I'm having the idea to try pre-shelling a bunch of 'em and then adding some flavors. A search of the googles reveals essentially nothing that doesn't involve cooking. I want to avoid cooking. Anyone have any suggestions for spice (and/or other?) additions that would contribute to a desirable snack?
Biked to work today (and home yesterday). I really should be doing this more often.
Ditto, though for Monday and Tuesday. Opted to not bike today due to some soreness from essentially doubling the amount of bicycling done in a day.
I loved biking to work in Des Moines. It took roughly the same time as in my car, but I felt better and I went an entire month on a tank of gas.
I went to Vegas for a long weekend and came back weighing less than when I left. That's a win, and I wasn't even trying for it.
I lost 15 pounds in a single day! Oh, but I guess I can't really recommend my method to anyone else here. Philo, how about some air-popped popcorn for your trip? No ideas for your peas other than eating them unadorned if you don't want to cook 'em.
The popcorn is a great idea - and oddly enough, a fairly usual snack in our household that I didn't even consider for the trip.
Wasabi peas are good - don't know how they make them tho.
There's some sort of flash frying involved apparently.
I think I've decided to look for some ready-made grilling dry rubs and give them a try. Worst case scenario, I have more dry rub and an excuse to grill.
Stephen King coming to H'town - twill be at the Mark Twain house for summat book signage/speakening.
I've not read his product myself (I'm prolly the only boyo on the planet) but the wife has. She quit when she was reading 'Misery' - too much bad input.
Good group ride tonite. Approx 26 miles with the B squad out of Rocky Hill. Very hot/humid, but no thunderstorms - I'll take it.
118 miles last week. Quite sore. But necessary.
I fell off the exercise wagon a bit with a family vacation and a week on the road for work. I also didn't count calories for the same two weeks. The upside is that I didn't gain any weight. The down side is I lost much of the conditioning I had going for me.
Then I went and agreed to do a race/fundraiser next weekend (giving me a full 9 days to train) that will require me to run 2 legs of an 81 mile race. I will have a 7 mile leg and a 6 mile leg. This may not end well....
Best of luck to you.
I too have been on vacation. I haven't stretches of good days and stretches of bad days within that. I went on a couple of long hikes last weekend, which helped. It's my sister's wedding this weekend, so it'll be interesting to see how this goes for me.
