An inside-the-parker for Buxton!  A big day for Kepler!  The debut of Gonsalves!

ROCHESTER 1, PAWTUCKET 0 IN ROCHESTER (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Chris Colabello was 1-for-3 with two walks.

Pitching stars:  Liam Hendriks struck out five in six innings, giving up four hits and three walks.  Shairon Martis struck out three in three innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Michael Tonkin struck out two in one inning, giving up no hits and one walk.

Opposition stars:  Brandon Workman pitched 6.1 shutout innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five.  Brock Huntzinger struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and two walks.  Mark Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a walk.

Key inning:  The tenth.  It was a scoreless tie.  Beresford led off with a single.  An error on a bunt put runners on first and third.  An intentional walk loaded the bases.  With one out, Jeff Clement singled in the winning run.

Prospect watch:  Antoan Richardson was 1-for-4 with a triple.

NEW BRITAIN 7, PORTLAND 5 IN PORTLAND

Batting stars:  Eddie Rosario was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Nate Hanson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Matt Hauser struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Daniel Turpen pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Anthony Renaudo pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks.  Derrik Gibson was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Garin Cecchini was 2-for-4 with a double.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The Rock Cats trailed 5-2.  They had a runner on second with two out.  Jordan Parraz singled to put runners on first and third.  An error made it 5-3 and put two on.  Santana hit a two run double to tie the score.  Rosario singled in the go-ahead run and two more singles brought in an insurance run.

Prospect watch:  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Miguel Sano pinch-hit and was 0-for-1.

FORT MYERS 7, BRADENTON 3 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-3 with a walk and two home runs (his fifth and sixth), driving in four.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his first.  Matt Koch was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored once.

Pitching star:  Kyle Davies struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Taylor Lewis was 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a triple, and an RBI.  D. J. Crumlich was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Key inning:  The fourth.  The Miracle led 2-0 and scored four times to take control.  With one out, Lance Ray singled and Kvasnicka hit a two-run homer.  Levi Michael then singled, and with two out, Buxton hit an inside-the-park home run.

Prospect watch:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4 with a walk.

WISCONSIN 8, CEDAR RAPIDS 7 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  J. D. Williams was 3-for-5 with a walk, a triple, and a home run (his seventh), scoring three times and driving in three.  Jhonatan Arias was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Tyrone Taylor was 2-for-4 with a double and a grand slam, scoring twice and driving in five.  Chris McFarland was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Alfredo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with two walks and scored twice.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Timber Rattlers trailed 6-3.  They had two on with two out.  Kaleb Merck, in his second inning of work, issued back-to-back walks to make it 6-4 with the bases loaded.  Taylor then hit a grand slam to put Wisconsin ahead.  The Kernels had a chance in the eighth, scoring once and loading the bases with two out, but Niko Goodrum grounded out to end the threat.

Prospect watch:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4 with a walk and scored once.

ELIZABETHTON 5, BLUEFIELD 2 IN BLUEFIELD (13 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Tanner Vavra was 3-for-4 with a walk and scored once.  Bryan Haar was 3-for-6 with a walk and a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Zach Granite was 3-for-7, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Starter Josh Burris struck out four in four innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks.  Brandon Peterson struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up one run on one hit.  Austin Malinowski struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Adonys Cardona pitched three shutout innings despite allowing five hits and three walks.  Alvido Jimenez struck out four in two shutout innings, allowing no hits and two walks.  Matt Dean was 2-for-6.

Key inning:  The thirteenth.  The score was tied at two.  Granite led off with a single.  With one out, Haar tripled, Rory Rhodes doubled, and Logan Wade singled, producing three runs.

Prospect watch:  Kelvin Ortiz was 2-for-6 with an RBI.  Rhodes was 2-for-7 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

GCL TWINS 8, GCL RED SOX 2 AT RED SOX

Batting stars:  Adonis Pacheco was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.  Brian Navarreto was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Starter Stephen Gonsalves struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.  Markus Solbach pitched three perfect innings with two strikeouts.  Miguel Gonzalez pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Starter Willie Ethington pitched three shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.  Aneudis Peralta was 2-for-4.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The Twins led 2-0.  A walk and a hit batsman put two on with two out.  Pacheco hit a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.  The Red Sox came back with two in the bottom of the inning on a triple by Raymel Flores, but never got closer.

Prospect watch:  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-5.  Engelb Vielma  was 1-for-4, scoring twice and driving in one.

DSL PADRES 9, DSL TWINS 8 AT PADRES

Batting stars:  Frank Encarnacion was 3-for-3 with two walks and a home run (his first), scoring three times and driving in two.  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-5 and scored once.

Pitching star:  Ezequiel Zarauela struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Wilfri De La Cruz was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Ronaldo Contreras was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Jhonatan Pena was 2-for-5 and scored once.

Key inning:  The sixth.  The score was tied at seven.  With two out and a man on second, Contreras doubled to give the Padres the lead and scored on a pair of wild pitches.  In the seventh, the Twins scored once and had the bases loaded with one out, but a double play ended the threat.

Prospect watch:  Dubal Baez was 1-for-4.  Joel Ramirez was 0-for-2 with three walks and scored twice.

  2. On further review, it appears that the reason Gonsalves only pitched two innings is that this game was suspended due to rain. It was completed the next day as part of a doubleheader.
