Freealonzo and I are seeing Merle Haggard tonight at the State Theatre. I wonder how much he'll play of the albums I know. I only have nine, covering much of 1965-71 and 2010-present. So there's basically a 40-year gap in his career that I've heard just a handful of songs from. He's had 40 #1s and I know like eight of them.
Well, time to share the lists.
'Buried' - Family of the Year Loma Vista
'Goodbye Stranger' - Supertramp Breakfast in America
'Fortunate Son' - Creedence Clearwater Revival Willy and the Poor Boys
'Darts of Pleasure' - Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand
'Radioactive' - Imagine Dragons Night Visions
'The Interlocutor' - Squirrel Nut Zippers Hot
'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight' - R.E.M. Automatic For the People
'Seen Your Video' - The Replacements Let It Be
'Black' - Pearl Jam Ten
'Train in Vain' - The Clash London Calling
Yup - I like this lineup very much.
Keep On Steppin' - Junior Wells - Best Of
Rock The Casbah - The Clash - Story Of
Icicle - Tori Amos - Under The Pink
Baby Can I Hold You - Tracy Chapman - S/T
Hippie, Hippie, Hoorah - Black Lips - Let It Bloom
Fishin' Blues - Taj Mahal - Taj's Blues
Time Has Told Me - Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
Moondance -Van Morison - Moondance
Let Down - Radiohead - Ok Computer
One By One - Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Ave
Wow, I haven't listened to Under the Pink in a million years. I might have to do that.
Love Taj Mahal (and the old Rising Sons stuff).

I thought only Philo and I had Hootie!
I've got all of Cracked Rear View in iTunes, but none on the device at the moment. I did buy Rucker's One Tequila a couple of weeks ago, though.
AMR, I have found that songs from artists like Merle Haggard are in your DNA. I'm thinking there will be a bunch of songs we don't have on our I-pods but once he starts singing them we'll go "oh yeah, I know this one."

Notes
1. I have 4 versions of this song on my i-pod, this is by far my favorite
6. I had to drive to and from Duluth on Wednesday and I listened to London Calling on the way. Album still holds up.
9. In the high upper pantheon of GBV songs. I have 3 different versions of this song and have listened to all versions a total of 116 times.
Oh I'm not worried about not knowing Merle's songs from 1972-2009.
I'm not going in totally blind, like I would have at a George Jones show before he passed, or like I did at the Waylon Jennings set at Lolla '96 (Des Moines). I know what I know and I know what I don't. If I had unlimited time to listen and unlimited cash to buy CDs and LPs, I'd be familiar with the meat of his career, but I don't.
I guess he'll play one or two from the early years, at least one off the last two albums, and three or four of the #1s not off those albums.

Here's a newly released acoustic version of 1979

Any time for a meet 'n greet? Don't sweat it if you're busy.
It doesn't look good. Only in for a couple days and have FIL bday party tomorrow.
Do you really think I can avoid sweating on this trip?
We're working on the weather; it should be nice(r) here for you
After this, it's back to Hag...

*Notes:
1. English lyrics from a German artist (whose first album was instrumental), with a Czech-language title. He also had a Japanese girlfriend at the time, not sure if they're still together. (Hanayo, with whom I was independently familiar.)
3. Pärt is the composer. Performed by the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, conducted by Tamás Benedeck. A Naxos release (so you can buy it for like $8: great deal).
6. Highly recommended album from the former (current?) Bad Seed. Jazzy, Cinematic, some could be songs from a rock operetta, concept album. Check out this song.
7. One of my dissections of Tori Amos's song "Beauty Queen". I should put one up on soundcloud sometime. Not sure if this is the one though.
T. Dilemma of iTunes entry. Del's first album billed him as "tha Funkee" which is appropriate for the sound, and he switched to "the Funky" for later albums, matching his switch in sound from Ice Cube's cartoony P-Funk. But do I really want him to be two artists in my library. Haven't decided anything yet.
Škoda is a car manufacturer in the Czech Republic, but I don't know if it means something else. Mluvit is the infinitive verb for "to speak/talk" (Mluvím česky - "I speak Czech")
From the label's press release:
Oh idioms, the bane of any language learner or teacher.
Everyone should listen to ”Fratres”. Even if classical/instrumental isn't your thing. It's maybe the most haunting thing ever. It was used in There Will Be Blood to great effect.
I heard a version with cello and bass drum that was amazing, but it's been recorded in a huge number of arrangements. Find one, it's worth it.
The Naxos CD has Six arrangements. I definitely prefer the arrangements with percussion. Pärt knows how to use percussion so sparingly to so heavily an effect. Also, on the choir, organ, & percussion piece "De Profundis". (Though I know we have different opinions on his choral works, Ghosty.)
I've pretty much been listening to Parts of Speech, Dessa's new album, this week. I like it a lot, but I do agree with the reviewer who said that it's more like a short story collection than a novel.
For added fun, I watched Dessa Deconstructed, an interview with her by David Campbell of The Current. I know very little about song writing, so I found the discussion very interesting, as Dessa explains how a number of songs on the album came about. There are also live performances of a number of songs from the album.

Guess I'll be listening to Blonde Redhead this afternoon.
Gotta get more Nilsson.
Every single time I hear any of his stuff I have the same reaction.
1. "Everything Will Be Alright" - The Killers - Hot Fuss
2. "Jolene" - Dolly Parton - Jolene
3. "Space Oddity" - David Bowie - David Bowie
4. "Reptilia" - The Strokes - Room On Fire
5. "Live and Let Die" - Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I
6. "Rhythm Of The Rain" - The Cascades - Rhythm Of The Rain
7. "Her Pretty Face" - The Apples In Stereo - Look Away + 4
8. "Lord, I'm Discouraged" - The Hold Steady - Stay Positive
9. "You Can't Steal My Love" - Mando Diao - Hurricane Bar
10. "Wrapped Up In You" - Garth Brooks - Scarecrow
B: "The Impression That I Get" - Mighty Mighty Boss Tones - Let's Face It
So Riotfest added Pixies and Joan Jett (among others) but lost Motorhead and Bad Brains. Probably an even trade, even though Kim Deal has left the Pixies.
hmm... I dunno. I think that would take away quite a bit from the dynamic. Frank Black is still a sight to behold, though, so you're probably right.
It's been a while.

This Can O album is still probably my favorite thing El-P has ever been involved with (well, considering it's one of my five favorite albums ever...). This is the track that made me totally fall in love with it. In the middle of a verse Vast realizes he rhymed a word with itself, collects himself, and starts the whole verse over. All while staying on beat. If you've never heard it, I definitely recommend it.
If anyone wants to join AMR and me at Merle Haggard tonight looks like there are rush seats available:
Edit: see below
Nevermind - 8 pm, tix on sale at 6...I'm in if I don't have to be a student/educator.
You could always pull the "Hey man, I'm a veteran and fought for your right to sell rush tickets" card.
Seriously, I'm always confused by that student/educator thing. You may want to call the box office, they'll give you the straight dope. If you get tix, AMR and I will be at The Depot at around 7:00p.
Is Student/Educator Rush a Rush tribute band?
Wish I still had my SBG Col. of Law ID in my wallet: valid ID get's you access to 2 tickets for $20 apiece. Otherwise, they're $54. Enjoy the show gentlemen.
