    1. There was a whole lot of gnashing of teeth by certain segments of the fan base when the Twins talked to Frankie this offseason. Would he have been this successful for the Twins? I'm not sure. But I would've liked to see if he improved having Bobby Cuellar to work with on the big club.

    2. lets see if:
      1. he can make it through the year without an injury
      2. he can do the same thing next year
      3. he throws the Twins under the bus for making be a pitch to contact guy

      1. We've been here a few times, but when we arrived to actually housesit, the first thing we saw was an overturned cockroach right inside the door. Last night I saw another, booking across the kitchen wall. It darted into a box of Kashi bars when I tried to get it (why do they get to be fast on top of being disgusting?) and I had to knock it over, draw it into the sink and drown it. Looking forward to today's cockroach!

        1. Well it's eating Kashi, so it's obviously a cockroach that's concerned about what it puts into its body. It can't be that disgusting!

        2. Wait, we're talking about two here? I thought you had a real infestation there or something. Still not good, but that's a whole different scenario

            1. Not necessarily, but most likely. Turn on a kitchen light at 2 a.m., assuming the light has been out for several hours, and you'll get a better idea of what you have.

              1. Was in Poland during a college trip (a whilst back). We stayed in a lot of college dorms - advice was when going to the restroom, shut your eyes, turn on the bathroom light, and count to 5. Then safe to open your eyes.

          1. I guess living where trees (and lawns) are sparse, one would not expect to see many.

If I see two in a day, they would be two dead ones, because we treat the house periodically. And I've never seen one in the kitchen or pantry.

            1. in our last apartment in SD, back in 1992, our downstairs neighbors had an infestation, which affected the whole building to a degree. After they moved out, the apartment managers fumigated. I happened to walk through that apartment afterwards. The floor was carpeted with dead roaches. Freaky.

              1. Coincidentally, our place is being fumigated while we watch this one. So, at least there's that to look forward to. We put down a glue trap a few weeks ago and caught a scorpion and a roach in the first couple of days, which wasn't exactly comforting. There hasn't been another big thing since, so we're feeling a tad better.

                  1. Unfortunately, Dora and Boots are unavailable, as they're currently going to the ridge, then the park, then Cherry Mountain. Ridge, park, Cherry Mountain!!!!!!!!!

                    1. He's the map, he's the map, he's the map, he's the map.
He's the map, he's the map, he's the map.
                      He's! The! Map!

        3. Some of us happen to be housing attorneys and could tell lots and lots of stories. Ask me about bed bugs sometime.

            1. Then let me just share this little tidbit:

Once fertilized, the female will continue laying eggs the rest of her life, and continues to travel as far from her original home as possible, leaving eggs wherever she goes.

                1. According to wikipedia, they can live about 9 months post-fertilization, so... a very long way.

                  Also, they go through walls.

    1. My favorite part of the article:

  2. anyone watching the WCCO noon news? Glen Perkins (who, with his wife, was promoting their 5k fundraiser) crashed the weather guy's forecast.

    gotta love that guy.

  3. Over at CdL I'm running a 64-person tournament with varying challenges. We're at the round of 16, which is nearly all made up of WGOMers, and the challenge is to pick more of today's MLB games correctly than your opponent. If anyone feels like seeing who's awesome, this is the spreadsheet.

        1. There was an approximately 50% chance I was going to use it as an official gauge of awesomeness.
(Well, if I converted lines to odds, probably closer to 46% chance.) Has the team traded Pelfrey yet? I think that could hurt me.
But if he's traded ten minutes before his start leaving Smewsquack to start with no warning, I like my odds even better.

        1. This reminds me... a while back, when I went to the game with DPWY, I had a malt cup. No wooden spoon, but there was malt cup.

          1. I believe you may have mentioned this fact. I question the authenticity of a "malt cup" without a wooden spoon, but, still, encouraging.

            1. The Madison Mallards sell a malt cup, but I haven't had it so I can't say if there was a wooden spoon. Of course, I'm done attending games any more, so it'll have to wait until next year.

          2. CoC provided me a wooden spoon with the malt cup last week. MEMORIES!!!!

            1. You have time for another? The fools in my office don't know what they're missing - there's still at least a dozen cups in the break room freezer!

              1. Sorry, I had already left when I saw this. I definitely have time later this week. Just tell me when.

        1. With it in 2014, it's 49 and 29 years since the previous All-Star games.

Edit: Since the previous games hosted by the Twins.

    1. and yes, that does imply that I have joined the Twitterverse. Mostly lurking, much to the Boss's dismay and disbelief.

  4. What we here at the WGOM have been saying about Hawk for quite a while, laid out in a thoughtful discussion on the BBTF site in response to a NYTimes article. He's a buffoon.
Note - I did not read the article, only the comments here.

  5. Saw another mention of a "staff infection" (no, it wasn't about the Twins' pitching), and it's moving up on my Really Annoying Misspellings list

      1. Reins/reigns has always bugged the crap out of me. Staff/staph is likely never going to be as prevalent as that, since I don't think they will be misused interchangeably.

        1. One of my peeves is less and fewer, as fewer is decidedly quantitative while less is qualitative. I used to tell clueless reporters to use the number test - if you can put a number in front of it, use fewer, if you can't, use less. I am less enthusiastic when the Twins win fewer games than they lose.

          1. I've seen less people get this right lately.
Folks probably care fewer about it, too.

          2. Actually, in writing that, I think that the problem might be things like money, time, and percents, where there are discrete, numerable units, but "fewer" can't be right.
We could talk about fewer people or less of the population, but if we drop the units, "less" is like the passive voice.
"Less and less are people memorizing their phone numbers" to "Less are memorizing their phone numbers."
or "People are remembering their phone numbers less" to "People are remembering less phone numbers."

Also, in normal speech, this can just be tricky, if you want to say, "People are working less," but as you're saying it decide to clarify to mean more part-time and less overtime, so you extend it to "People are working less hours." That's close to correct, and unambiguous in meaning, so you don't correct yourself or stumble. You just leave it there and hope no one notices.

In the other direction, "more" works for both, so it's not really fair. LESS and FEWER have to team up to be the opposite of MORE.

    1. I refer to our monthly staff meeting as the staff infection. Gets a laugh about 22.34% of the time.

  6. I missed it if someone brought it up- SBG got mentioned on the latest episode of Gleeman and the Geek (way, way towards the end). It was nice of you to send in a question that wasn't about Aaron's car, Stick.

      1. I drive around 4000 miles a year, probably less. Commuting via bus or bike helps tremendously.

      2. Yeah, I hit 3000 miles just in my work commute in roughly two months. I bet yours is a lot like that, too.

        1. Pretty close. About half the time, I'm like Gleeman, the other half, I'm a road warrior. If you include the miles I put on in company vehicles, I'm way over that.

    1. SHARE! What was the question, and how did they respond?

Hell, no, I'm not gonna listen to their podcast to find out.

      1. Stick asked Gleeman to ask Bonnes if he still thought the Twins' 2002-2010 run is better than the Rays' current run. The Geek answered in the affirmative without hesitation.

          1. Looking at 4 playoff years in six in the AL East with an AL pennant and maybe another. Plus, they are still young. As a Twins fan, I'd trade the Twins run for the Rays run right now in a heartbeat.

But, then, I'm a Bolt over Phelps guy.

  7. whoa. I just got the new(ish) a-ha banner. That's pretty awesome. I don't understand it or the Jeff A context, but it is awesome.

  8. Cockroach update: still one per day. I was nervous I was going to go a whole day without seeing one!

I got up to get a beer, and thought "this is about when I saw one yesterday. I'll glance around."

Six inches from my bare feet, he was.

  9. so, if you enjoy political theater and seeing people's careers die before your eyes, do yourself a favor and head over to TPM to read about Barbara Morgan's tirade about her ex-intern on the Weiner campaign. SPECTACULAR!

there may be juuust a few naughty words quoted.
