August 4, 2013: Easy, Like Today’s Morning

Actually, my kids woke up far too early for me to consider this an easy morning.  Someone put on a pot of coffee, eh?  Hello?  Fine, I guess I've gotta do it myself.

  1. I'm pretty sure I saw Adrian Peterson the other day, while picking my kids up from daycare (which is near to MSU). On a somewhat related note, Yahoo's frontpage is telling me things about fantasy football. We doing that again?

    1. I just tweeted about it, but in a week where it was generally acknowledged that the Twins stink, attendance for games against the Royals and Astros are 35k, 33k, 36k, 31k, and 38k with todays game near a sell out too.

      1. I'm like 3 episodes from the end of Season 3. And I had a dream - really a nightmare - about the show last night. It was intense.

        1. Yes, Sheenie cannot watch more than one episode at a time because she has such vivid nightmares about it.

            1. I've never had any particular dreams about it, and with only a couple of exceptions, the show doesn't really mess around with my head too much. However, when Linds, and friend of mine and I slammed the full first half of the fifth season, we all sort of walked around in a half-giddy, half-repulsed daze the rest of the day.

  2. NFL now doesn't allow offensive players to lead with their helmet, but only in certain areas of the field. The one area it's allowed is between the tackles within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage. Isn't that where 90% of that type of contact happens? Why would it matter where it happens on the field? Isn't this about protecting the offensive player so they don't knock themselves silly? Sure seems like the NFL is again doing too little in this area.

    1. I think I've heard before that speed+leading with the head is a much bigger problem than just leading with the head. Open field, where things are moving faster, it's much more dangerous. I can understand the distinction, assuming, of course, that I'm not just making up crap that's wrong (which I might be).

    2. I think this is more about protecting the defensive player, honestly. I've seen defensive backs get stunned quite a few times on plays where the offensive player is leading with his helmet. Runners are always going to try to get lower than the defensive player so the tackler doesn't have a shot at their legs, and you see lots of helmet-to-helmet contact on such plays.

The first time I see AD get flagged for it this year, I'll probably be ticked off for at least 10 seconds. I expect it to be within the first half of their first game.

  3. Thing I've Put in My Mouth This Week Attempting to Relieve Toothache Pain:
    -Advil
    -Tylenol
    -Tylenol III
    -Penicillin
    -Warm Salt Water
    -Ice
    -Ice Water
    -20% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
    -Listerine
    -Anbesol
    -Vanilla Extract
    -Peppermint Extract
    -Irish Whiskey

    1. When I had my toothache episode (I found out I needed 2 root canals), I found that Naproxen Sodium (Aleve is the most prominent brand name) worked best for me. Didn't take it all away, but it worked the best. Lots of ice packs, too.

      1. I will second this experience, and observe that it's what my dentist-sister recommends (or at least, she did so once upon a time).

      1. Because of the penicillin I'm not allowed to swallow the whiskey. It actually worked as well as anything else to numb the area, but the effect only lasted about 10 or 15 minutes.

    2. I'm glad "figure skate" hasn't found its way onto the list yet, Twayn. I'll secondy-second the Aleve recommendation, and mention that Tylenol PM really knocks me out on the rare occasions that I've got something bugging me so badly I can't sleep (back pain, dislocated finger, misdiagnosed torn ACL, etc.).

    3. The only thing that came close to helping for me was chewing aspirin. And it would work for about 10 minutes at a time. Tooth pain is the worst type of pain I've ever experienced.
