      1. That's just a new function that sbnation has.
Comments in that format trigger the "gif oracle" program to bring up a gif from the sbnation gif oracle library that's supposed to be related but also kindof randomized.

Comment section there (at least away from the team-specific channels) is a whole lot better than most places, probably because of fans of stuff like Mr. Bois and Spilly.

        1. That might be the greatest comment function ever conceived. Just needs a larger library of gifs.

            1. I've been diving into the athletic failures area. Seems like the library is larger than I thought, so my apologies.

(There should still probably be a whole Raul Ibanez section, though.)

              1. There is a Starlin Castro section, so...

Also, NFL believes that any unaltered gif is intellectual property infringement that they are not willing to allow without lawsuit.
So sbnation has to put stupid captions on the NFL ones for legal reasons.

  1. Sweet Caroline was no big deal, they can have it, but now Red Sox fans are trying to ruin Three Little Birds for me, and that I cannot forgive.

      1. I'm with you both. I kind-of like that Fenway doesn't do a whole lot (any) prompting of the crowd for cheers and whatnot. At least, I think I heard that in the past few days.

  2. after a week of obsessively checking, an acceptable (to my criteria) award travel flight finally became available again, so i booked right away this time. lady on the phone found an even better return flight than was available to the public for me. awesome.

    new years in europe!

  3. a sad day for the NBA:

    1. Sharman was also a minor league baseball player. He was an outfielder in the Dodgers' organization from 1950-53 and 1955, spending two seasons at AAA St. Paul. His minor league batting average was .281 and his slugging average was .411 (no reliable OBP stats are available).

      1. I also just saw this note about Bill Sharman--he is the only man to have been ejected from a major league game without playing in one. He got a September call-up in 1951, but never appeared in a game. However, on September 27 of that year, a huge argument erupted during a Dodgers game and the entire bench, including Sharman, was ejected.

    1. I say that every time I drive to Buffalo, MN.
(EAR takes retreats there about once a year.)
There's a Buffalo statue in the city, which I call the Buffalo Buffalo.

    1. Yeah, it was mentioned here a while ago. Still, you never need an excuse to watch Canseco head-butting the baseball

    2. I like MLBAM. Cory Schwartz, the VP of stats at mlb.com, was the one that pushed to open the PitchF/X data.
