Fourteen innings decide nothing in Mazatlan. A walkoff walk in Obregon. A split in Guasave.
LOS MOCHIS 5, MAZATLAN 5 IN MAZATLAN (14 INNINGS)
Los Mochis: Emmanuel Avila was 2-for-4 with two walks and two runs. Roberto Lopez (Angels) was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Leonardo Gonzalez pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
Mazatlan: Issmael Salas was 4-for-7 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one. Henry Mateo was 3-for-7 with a run. Alberto Carreon was 2-for-5 with a walk and a triple, driving in two.
The game: The Carreon triple drove in two and capped a three-run third that put Mazatlan ahead 3-0. In the fifth, Los Mochis came back. After the first two batters went out, they got three singles, a double, and another single to score four times and take a 4-3 lead. Los Mochis added an insurance run in the seventh, but Mazatlan came back with two in the bottom of the seventh to tie it, aided by three wild pitches. That was it for the scoring, and after fourteen innings the teams apparently decided they'd had enough.
Random: I don't recall a winter league game simply being stopped and declared a tie before. However, the game is listed as "final". It's possible that it's merely suspended and will be completed at some other time, though. I guess we'll see.
OBREGON 8, CULIACAN 7 IN OBREGON
Culiacan: Emmanuel Valdez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one. Ali Solis (Pittsburgh) was 2-for-2 with two walks and two homers, driving in four. Ronnier Mustelier was 2-for-4 with a run.
Obregon: Donald Lutz was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.
The game: Obregon scored two in the fifth to go ahead 3-2. Culiacan came back in the sixth, as a Solis three-run homer put the lid on a four-run inning that gave Culiacan a 6-3 advantage. Culiacan added an insurance run in the eighth on a wild pitch, but it wasn't enough. In the ninth, the first two batters reached base, and despite being down four runs, were bunted to second and third. Agustin Murillo singled them both home to make it 7-5. A single and a sacrifice fly made it 7-6, but with two out. A walk moved the tying run to second and Karim Garcia singled to tie it up. A hit batsman loaded the bases and a walk brought home the winning run.
NAVOJOA 9, MEXICALI 5 IN MEXICALI
Navojoa: Alan Sanchez was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs. Luis Fonseca was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Rolando Acosta was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
Mexicali: Ricky Alvarez was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), scoring twice and driving in two. Kevin Kouzmanoff (Miami) was 2-for-5 with a run.
The game: Navojoa scored two in the first and took control with a five-run second. Wes Bankston had a two-run double in the big inning.
GUASAVE 5, HERMOSILLO 1 IN GUASAVE (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)
Hermosillo: Luis Garcia was 2-for-3 with a home run, his fourth. Jerry Owens was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Guasave: Mark Hamilton (Boston) was 2-for-3 with a home run (his third) and two runs. Orlando Lara pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
The game: Guasave scored single runs in the first and second and took control with a two-run third. Leonardo Heras and Hamilton each homered in the third inning.
HERMOSILLO 7, GUASAVE 1 IN GUASAVE (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)
Hermosillo: Carlos Gastelum was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two. Jerry Owens was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run. Ryan Verdugo (Kansas City) pitched five innings, giving up one run on two hits and five walks with three strikeouts.
Guasave: Marco Tovar pitched 5.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
The game: Guasave scored one in the third on a single and three walks. It stayed 1-0 until the sixth, when Gastelum singled in the tying run. In the seventh, Jose Amador hit a pinch-hit two-run double, Gastelum had an RBI double, and Luis Garcia hit a three-run homer to give Hermosillo a 7-1 lead.
