  1. There is no doubt but that the Wolves are every bit as good as the Clippers. That was a fun game last night and a tough loss. But still, this club is really good*.

    1. I admit I'm a little concerned over the Bud thing. Initial reports indicated the type of surgery he had meant he'd be back by now, but there's still no word on his timetable. Was Brandon Roy contagious, or something?

    2. I think this is exactly the right attitude for this team:

"We're a very good team when we are fighting back, and this was another great learning experience for us," Love said.

      emphasis mine

    3. I've been following the team for a while, but I think last night was the first night I was completely, fully invested in a game. I was on the edge of my seat and totally crushed when that ball K-Love tried to tap in fell off the rim.

I can't wait for the next time they face the Clippers.

  2. So I just officially accepted my new job. The offer was more generous than I anticipated (more than a 12% increase over my last job) and includes full medical, dental and vision, 20 PTO days and 12 paid holidays per year, incentive bonuses, 401(k) and more. The worm has finally turned. I start on the 25th, but I'm going to spend a few hours a day until then learning as much as possible about the products and markets so I can hit the ground running. I'm almost as excited about this job as Stick is about the Timberwolves.

                    1. I was a pretty big Blossom fan, too, but I preferred Clarissa Explains it All. Probably because of my crush on Melissa Joan Hart.

                    2. I was a pretty big Clarissa Explains It All fan, too, but I preferred Sabrina The Teenage Witch. Probably because of my crush on Caroline Rhea.

    1. Congrats. There've been some rough breaks for folks since I've joined up here, and some of them are ongoing, but it makes hearing about the good breaks all the more exciting.

  3. Yesterday was my godson Emerson's 2nd birthday. He's the son of Matt Trueblood, whose writing I occasionally link to.

Emerson has hypoplastic left-heart syndrome (he has only the right half of his heart). He's got a host of other issues too. I know I've mentioned him before here. He's now got a 6-month old brother too, and the two of them are, more or less, similar in terms of development. Emerson can now sit up on his own, grab, sign some basic words, etc. It's actually been awesome to see him start to put some of that stuff together lately.

Every time Emerson passed a milestone - a week old, a month, 3 months, etc. - the doctors/nurses would express some measure of amazement, since, quite simply, they didn't expect him to survive. And he's still incredibly frail, and he has another major open heart surgery ahead of him in a year or two, so he's not out of the woods by any stretch. Still, it's a really beautiful thing that he's still going. He spent the first year+ of his life just fighting to stay alive. Now to see him going strong, to see his personality emerging more and more, to see him go through some of the developmental stages... he doesn't know it, but he's an inspiration.

    1. HBD to your Godson!
Hypoplastic Left Heart is not a good thing to be born with. I know we see a quite a few of those claims in our high-cost reinsurance claims.
I'm not sure of this, but I think that making it to his second birthday is a very good sign. Has he finished the series of heart surgeries? I assume he has if he's out of the hospital.

    2. Two of my little brothers were deathly ill as little guys - one lost his entire immune system at 22 months, the other had juvenile leukemia. Inspiration only begins to cover how I feel about them.

Glad to hear Emerson's making progress.

    3. HBD, Emerson! My friend's son has the same. His son had all three surgeries and is now five years old!

      1. That's awesome. What's the location of your friend? If it's anywhere near MN, I'd be willing to bet your friend and my sister have had at least a passing exchange.

        1. Actually, six in January. Hard to believe.

I'm almost certain they've been in contact. It sounds like they've found a real tight-knit group.

  4. I don't know if anyone follows The Daily Gopher, which is a SB Nation fan site but over the summer they came up with a meme to name a Gopher offensive formation which is basically the I-formation. Anyway through that effort "The Minnesota Golden I" was born.

On Saturday during the PSU-UMN game, the ESPN2 announcers actually used the MN Golden I name a few times. The first time I heard it I was shocked but the announcers used it the entire game. Of course the denizens of The Daily Gopher went nuts and someone put together a video of everytime it was used during the game. Here it is.

This would be similar to having Joe Buck yell out Hinkse! in 2010 anytime Kubel had a big hit for the Twins.

    1. I heard Beth Mowins call it the Golden-I and I had to laugh. Well done.

also, that formation is awesome and I wish the Vikings would use it

        1. That's what they say. I'm not feeling that great about the next two weeks:

AMR has a bankruptcy hearing scheduled for November 21.

  5. I know analysis on ESPN's power rankings is low-hanging fruit, but this might be the most ridiculous comment ever, this week regarding the Maple Leafs:

The Leafs continue to ride great goaltending and high-octane offense, but it's not a recipe for playoff success.

    1. I assume it's not the recipe for playoff success because they're the Leafs and incapable of having it?

    2. The quote for the Wild was pretty good too:

"Josh Harding might be the most understated story in the NHL for a Wild team that looked early on like it was in real trouble."

  6. the Gophers basketball team plays tonight and its not on the Big Ten network (not a shock. BTN's non conference basketball coverage is awful), but its not even on BTN2Go or other internet stream. With no Wild or Wolves tonight, FSN would probably love to broadcast the game but cant because BTN.

Its 2013. If you are in a major conference, every game should be on tv.

    1. GW broke 100 for the first time since the glory days of Pops, Pinnock, Mike Hall, and Carl Elliott AND I got tweeted by the school's AD (when I thanked him for letting me be able to watch games for free from home in MN). This team is looking good!

    2. We are talking about a rebuilding Gophers team vs. Montana, so not surprised. But yeah, you'd think the U could just set up a webcam and tie it in with the radio feed like they used to do for MLB spring training games.

      1. the Big Ten Network has 2 spillover channels for football, but never use them for basketball.
I guess it was on the BigTenDigital Network, which apparently I dont have a subscription to.

    1. Rick feels the same way.

So the Knicks are going to get LeBron AND Love. Wow. They'll be great. Now if only the new commissioner figures out a way to make sure they get Wiggins in this year's draft they will be guaranteed to win the championship, right?
