Venezuelan View: Games of 11/13

Lots of tight games, with two going in two extra innings.  A good outing for Yorman Landa.  A walkoff homer for Magallanes.

MAGALLANES 6, LA GUAIRA 5 IN MAGALLANES (10 INNINGS)

Twins:  Yorman Landa (La Guaira) struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and no walks.

La Guaira:  C. J. Retherford was 2-for-5 with a home run, his sixth.  Luis Sardinas (Texas) was 2-for-5 with two runs.  Andy Wilkins (White Sox) was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Magallanes:  Frank Diaz was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Eliezer Alfonzo was 2-for-5 with a home run, his fourth.  Sergio Perez struck out six in 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks.

The game:  Alex Cabrera hit a three-run homer and Retherford a solo shot in the first inning to give La Guaira a 4-0 lead.  La Guaira still led 5-3 after six.  An RBI double by Diaz made it 4-3 in the seventh and Ezequiel Carrera led off the ninth with a home run to tie the score at five.  With one out in the tenth, Alfonzo hit a walkoff homer.

ARAGUA 5, ANZOATEGUI 2 IN ARAGUA

Twins:  Eduardo Escobar (Anzoategui) was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Oswaldo Arcia (Aragua) was 0-for-3.  Josmil Pinto (Aragua) was 1-for-4.  Dakota Watts (Aragua) pitched a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and one walk.

Anzoategui:  Jose Gil (Yankees) was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

Aragua:  Ronny Cedeno (San Diego) was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.  Guillermo Quiroz was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Luis Maza was 2-for-3 with a double.

The game:  Aragua scored single runs in the third and fourth.  Anzoategui tied it with a pair of sacrifice flies in the fifth, but Aragua got single runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth to win.

CARACAS 7, LARA 6 IN CARACAS (10 INNINGS)

Lara:  Joe Thurston was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring twice.  Nick Buss (Dodgers) was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs.  Guilder Rodriguez (Texas) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Caracas:  Eric Thames (Houston) was 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer.  Luis Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a double.  J. D. Martinez (Houston) was 2-for-4 with two walks, scoring once and driving in two.

The game:  Lara scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run sacrifice bunt-plus-error to take a 4-2 lead.  Martinez hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to tie it.  There was no more scoring until the tenth, when Buss hit a two-run triple to put Lara ahead 6-4.  In the bottom of the tenth, Ramon Cabrera (Detroit) homered, Alex Gonzalez hit an RBI double to tie it, and Jesus Aguilar (Cleveland) singled in the winning run with two out.

MARGARITA 6, ZULIA 5 IN ZULIA

Margarita:  Carlos Rivero was 3-for-4 with a double and two home runs (his fourth and fifth), driving in five.  Alberto Gonzalez was 2-for-4.

Zulia:  Ernesto Mejia (Atlanta) was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Marwin Gonzalez (Houston) was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Roy Merritt pitched 6.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  A two-run sixth put Zulia ahead 3-0.  Rivero homered in the seventh to make it 3-1 and hit a grand slam to cap a five-run eighth and put Margarita in front 6-3.  Zulia got RBI singles from Gonzalez and Felix Perez in the bottom of the eighth and had runners on first and third with one out.
