Mexican Matchups: Games of 11/14

Valle leads Los Mochis to the mountaintop.  Russell Branyan (remember him?) has been hot for Mexicali.  A comeback win for Culiacan.

LOS MOCHIS 4, HERMOSILLO 3 IN LOS MOCHIS (10 INNINGS)

Hermosillo:  Jesus Loya (Boston) was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Carlos Gastelum was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.

Los Mochis:  Sebastian Valle (Philadelphia) was 3-for-3 with a walk and two doubles, scoring three times.  Jamie Johnson (Detroit) was 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs.  Marco Quevedo pitched seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks with one strikeout.

The game:  It was a close game all the way, with neither team ever leading by more than one and no team scoring more than once in an inning.  Los Mochis scored in the first, second, and sixth and Hermosillo scored in the second, sixth, and eighth.  In the tenth, Valle walked, went to third on two wild pitches, and scored on a Johnson single to end the game.

MEXICALI 6, OBREGON 5 IN OBREGON

Mexicali:  Chris Roberson was 3-for-4 with a walk, a triple and a two-run homer (his seventh), scoring twice.  Gil Velazquez (Miami) was 2-for-4 with a home run and scored twice.  Javier Martinez pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks with one strikeout.

Obregon:  Donald Lutz was 3-for-3 with a walk and a home run (his third).  Dan Robertson (San Diego) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a triple, scoring twice.  Alfredo Amezaga was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The game:  Obregon led 2-1 after one.  Roberson hit a two-run homer in the second to put Mexicali up 3-2 and Russell Branyan hit a two-run homer in the third to make it 5-2.  A Velazquez homer increased the lead to 6-2 in the fourth.  In the eighth, a triple and four singles produced three Mexicali runs and put the go-ahead run on base with one out, but the final five Mexicali batters were retired.

CULIACAN 6, NAVOJOA 4 IN CULIACAN

Navojoa:  Jose Chavez was 4-for-5 and scored once.  Alan Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Alejandro Soto pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits and five walks with four strikeouts.

Culiacan:  Luis Durango was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Emmanuel Valdez was 2-for-2 with two walks and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Amauri Sanit pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  Navojoa scored two in the third to take a 3-0 lead.  Culiacan got on the board in the bottom of the third on a single and three walks, scored another single run in the sixth, and tied it on a Valdez RBI double in the seventh.  In the eighth, Joey Meneses (Atlanta) hit a three-run double to put Culiacan in the lead for good at 6-3.  Navojoa got one back in the ninth and put the tying run on base with two out.
