Mexican Matchups: Games of 11/24

A tight game in Culiacan.  A grand slam puts Navojoa in control.  A sweep for Guasave.

MEXICALI 3, CULIACAN 2 IN CULIACAN

Mexicali:  Francisco Mendez was 3-for-4 with a double for Culiacan.  Edgar Osuna struck out seven in 6.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and one walk.  Russell Branyan was 0-for-2 with three walks and a run.

Culiacan:  Daniel Rodriguez (Atlanta) struck out four in 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks.  Luis Cruz was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

The game:  Mexicali got single runs in the second and fourth to take a 2-0 lead.  In the seventh, RBI singles by Jorge Cantu and Ali Solis (Tampa Bay) tied the score.  The first two Mexicali batters were retired in the eighth, but a single, a walk, and an RBI single by Xorge Carrillo (Mets) put Mexicali back in the lead.  Culiacan had the tying run in scoring position in the eighth and ninth.

MAZATLAN 5, OBREGON 4 IN OBREGON

Mazatlan:  Alberto Carreon was 4-for-5 with a run.  Oswaldo Morejon was 2-for-5 with a double and a run.  Walter Ibarra (Cubs) was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.

Obregon:  Carlos Valencia was 2-for-3 with a walk and a three-run homer, his seventh.  Dan Robertson (Seattle) was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Oscar Rivera pitched two shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk.

The game:  Ibarra drove in two with a single and later came around to score, giving Mazatlan a 3-0 lead in the second.  They added single runs in the third and fourth to take a 5-0 lead.  Obregon came back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Valencia hit a three-run homer and Robertson delivered an RBI single.  And that was it.  Obregon got a man to third base with two out  in the seventh and had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, but could not tie the game.

NAVOJOA 5, HERMOSILLO 2 IN NAVOJOA

Hermosillo:  Luis Garcia was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run (his seventh), driving in two.  Jerry Owens was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Navojoa:  Alejandro Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Carlos Orrantia was 1-for-3 with a walk and a grand slam, his third homer.  Jose Oyervidez struck out nine in 6.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks.

The game:  Flores singled in a run in the second to give Navojoa a second inning lead of 1-0.  In the fifth, three singles preceded a grand slam by Orrantia with one out, giving Navojoa control of the game.  Hermosillo put up single runs in the seventh and ninth and got the tying run up to bat with two out in the ninth.

GUASAVE 4, LOS MOCHIS 0 IN GUASAVE (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Los Mochis:  Fredy Quintero pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

Guasave:  Japhet Amador (Houston) was 2-for-3 with a double and a two-run homer.  Zelous Wheeler (Yankees) was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs.  Marco Tovar pitched a complete game shutout, allowing two hits and no walks with six strikeouts.

The game:  Amador hit his two-run homer in the first inning.  Guasave added single runs in the second and third.  Los Mochis got a single to open the game but only got one more hit, another single in the sixth.

GUASAVE 6, LOS MOCHIS 3 IN GUASAVE (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Los Mochis:  Emmanuel Avila was 3-for-3 with two home runs (his fourth and fifth) and three RBIs.

Guasave:  Eduardo Arredondo was 3-for-4.  Zelous Wheeler (Yankees) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Leonardo Heras was 1-for-1 with two walks and a three-run homer, his third.

The game:  Avila hit a two-run homer in the second to take a 2-0 lead.  Guasave tied it in the third on a two-run homer by Heras.  In the fourth, Jose Felix (Texas) hit a two-run double, Jesus Lopez hit an RBI single, and a sacrifice fly made it 6-2.  Los Mochis added a run in the seventh on Avila's second homer but did not threaten to get back into the game.
