Puerto Rican Publication: Games of 11/23

Kennys Vargas goes deep, but it's not enough.  A good comeback by Ponce.

CAROLINA 5, MAYAGUEZ 3 IN CAROLINA

Twins:  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and two RBIs.  Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was used as a pinch-hitter and was 0-for-1.  Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 1-for-3.

Mayaguez:  Michael Taylor (Washington) was 2-for-4 with a run.

Carolina:  Enrique Hernandez (Houston) was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Ruben Gotay was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Bobby Bramhall pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Carlos Moncrief (Cleveland) singled in a run in the first and another scored on a double play to give Carolina 2-0 lead in the first.  They never lost the lead.  Mayaguez cut it to 2-1 in the second and to 4-3 in the eighth, but Mayaguez did not get a man on base after that.

PONCE 10, CAGUAS 8, IN CAGUAS

Twins:  Ryan O'Rourke (Caguas) walked the only man he faced.

Ponce:  Rubi Silva (Cubs) was 3-for-6 with two runs.  Jordan Lennerton (Detroit) was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and four RBIs.  Jan Vazquez (Dodgers) was 1-for-2 with two walks and a two-run homer (his second), scoring twice.

Caguas:  Ramon Castro was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Edgardo Baez was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Juan Silva (Dodgers) was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.

The game:  Lennerton hit a two-run single in the second and Vazquez hit a two-run homer in the third to put Ponce up 4-1.  In the bottom of the fourth, a two-run homer by Miguel Abreu ignited a five-run rally and put Caguas up 6-4.  Two singles sandwiched three walks in the fifth to make it 8-4, and Caguas appeared to be in control of the game.  In the seventh, though, Ponce got back into it on a two-run homer by Lennerton and a solo shot by Henry Ramos to make it 8-6.  In the eighth, an error tied the score, an RBI single by Ivan DeJesus put Ponce ahead, and Jose Ruiz singled in an insurance run.  Caguas brought the tying run up to bat in the eighth and ninth.
