Mexican Matchups: Games of 12/15

Big innings abound.  Culiacan plays Earl Weaver baseball.

MAZATLAN 6, GUASAVE 4 IN MAZATLAN

Guasave:  Jose Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his eighth.  Eduardo Arrendondo was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Manuel Flores pitched 3.1 innings, giving up one hit and no walks with two strikeouts.

Mazatlan:  Blake Gailen (Toronto) was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run (his eighth), scoring twice and driving in three.  Jeremy Acey was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Yadel Marti pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  It was tied at one when Mazatlan scored five times in the third.  Gailen had an RBI double in the inning.  Guasave scored single runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth to cut the lead to 6-4 and got the tying run up to bat with two out.

LOS MOCHIS 5, NAVOJOA 2 IN NAVOJOA

Los Mochis:  Sebastian Valle (Philadelphia) was 3-for-4 with a home run (his second), scoring twice.  Gilberto Mejia was 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs.  Jonathan Castellanos pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Navojoa:  Wes Bankston was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Luis Fonseca was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Jon Weber was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The game:  Weber's RBI single put Navojoa ahead 1-0 in the first.  Los Mochis came back with three in the second, getting a bases-loaded triple by Mejia.  Valle's homer made it 4-1 in the fourth.  Bankston's RBI double cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth, but Los Mochis got the run back in the eighth on a wild pitch.  Navojoa did not get the tying run up to bat after that.

CULIACAN 9, HERMOSILLO 5 IN CULIACAN

Hermosillo:  Daryle Ward was 1-for-2 with two walks and a two-run homer, his second.  Stefan Gartrell (Atlanta) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Luis Alfonzo Garcia was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Culiacan:  Feliz Perez (Cincinnati) was 2-for-4 with two three-run homers.  Mario Valdez was 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run homer, his fourth.  Ronnier Mustelier (Yankees)was 1-for-3 with two walks and a double, scoring twice.

The game:  The first Perez three-run homer came in the first inning.  Hermosillo cut the lead to 3-2 in the second on Ward's two-run homer and tied it in the sixth on an RBI single by Francisco Esparragoza.  Culiacan got a three-run homer by Valdez in the sixth to regain the lead and put the game out of reach on the second Perez three-run homer in the seventh.

MEXICALI 8, OBREGON 1 IN OBREGON

Mexicali:  Xorge Carrillo (Mets) was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, his second, scoring twice and driving in four.  Ricky Alvarez was 1-for-2 with a walk and a two-run homer, his eighth.  Terry Doyle pitched seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Obregon:  Sergio Contreras was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, driving in one.  Agustin Murillo was 2-for-4 with a run.  Oswaldo Martinez struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk.

The game:  Carrillo homered in the second to put Obregon on the board and a six-run third put the game away early.  Carrillo had a three-run double and Alvarez had a two-run homer in the third inning.  The lone Obregon run scored in the fourth.
