Venezuelan View: Games of 1/3

Day two of the playoffs.  Eduardo Escobar is a hero for Anzoategui.  Productive outs make the difference in Zulia.

ANZOATEGUI 7, LA GUAIRA 6 IN ANZOATEGUI

Twins:  Eduardo Escobar (Anzoategui) was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring  once and driving in two.

La Guaira:  Carlos Sanchez (White Sox) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring three times.  Cesar Suarez was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.  Bobby Cramer pitched four shutout innings of relief, giving up three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Anzoategui:  Gustavo Molina was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Jose Castillo was 3-for-4 with a home run.  Alexi Amarista (San Diego) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring twice.

The game:  An RBI single by Joe Thurston in the first and a Suarez homer in the second put La Guaira up 2-0.  Anzoategui then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second, getting a homer by Castillo, an RBI single by Escobar, a two-run double by Molina, and an RBI double by Gorkys Hernandez (Kansas City).  La Guaria got one back in the third, but it stayed 5-3 until the eighth, when an RBI ground out, a run-scoring single by Rene Reyes, and a sacrifice fly put La Guaira ahead 6-5.  In the bottom of the eighth, Amarista's RBI double tied the score and another RBI double by Escobar drove in what turned out to be the winning run.  La Guaira went down in order in the ninth.

ZULIA 2, MAGALLANES 0 IN ZULIA

Twins:  Deolis Guerra pitched a scoreless innings, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

Magallanes:  Ezequiel Carrera was 3-for-4.  Mario Lisson (San Francisco) was 2-for-3.  Juan Rivera was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.

Zulia:  Sandy Leon (Washington) was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  J. C. Linares (Boston) was 3-for-3 with a double.  Wilfredo Boscan pitched five innings, allowing four hits and one walk with one strikeout.

The game:  Zulia scored on a ground out in the second and on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to go ahead 2-0.  That was all they needed.  The best scoring chance for Magallanes was in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with one out.
