Day four of the playoffs. Some really good pitching.
CAGUAS 3, MAYAGUEZ 1 IN MAYAGUEZ
Twins: Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 0-for-4. Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 0-for-3 with a walk. Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 0-for-2.
Caguas: Andy Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Neftali Soto (Cincinnati) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Efrain Nieves (Toronto) struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.
Mayaguez: Randy Ruiz was 2-for-4. Dee Gordon (Dodgers) was 2-for-5. Luis Montanez was 2-for-3.
The game: There was no score until the fifth. An error plated the first run for Caguas and RBI singles by Gonzalez and Soto made the score 3-0. Mayaguez did not score until the ninth, when a pinch-hit single by Jose Morales brought home a run. Mayaguez had men on first and third with one out, but a popup and a ground out ended the game.
CAROLINA 3, PONCE 0 IN CAROLINA
Ponce: Pete Parise pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and one walk.
Carolina: Rene Garcia (Houston) was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one. Anthony Garcia (St. Louis) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double and scored once. Felix Diaz struck out five in five innings, allowing three hits and no walks.
The game: There was no score until the seventh, when Garcia doubled in a run and scored on a single by Jesus Feliciano. Carolina added a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly. Ponce's best scoring chance came in the first inning, when they got a pair of two-out singles. Ponce had only five hits in the game, all singles, and did not draw a walk.
