Venezuelan View: Games of 1/17

Day sixteen of the playoffs.  Lots and lots of runs.  A big comeback for Caracas.  La Guaira takes control late.

CARACAS 14, ANZOATEGUI 13 IN CARACAS

Anzoategui:  Jose Gil (Yankees) was 3-for-4 with a walk and a three-run homer, scoring twice.  Gorkys Hernandez (Kansas City) was 3-for-4 with a walk and four runs.  Ramon A. Ramirez pitched 4.1 innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Caracas:  Alex Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run (his fourth), driving in three.  Jesus Aguilar (Cleveland) was 3-for-5 with a walk and a home run, driving in three.  Yangervis Solarte was 2-for-5 with a walk, a double, and a triple, scoring three times and driving in one.

The game:  Anzoategui scored two in the first to take a 2-0 lead.  Caracas came back to lead 4-2 after two and 5-3 after three.  Anzoategui scored two in the fourth to tie it at five.  In the fifth, two walks and a single loaded the bases for Anzoategui and a sacrifice fly, a passed ball, and a Niuman Romero single put them ahead 8-5.  Anzoategui added one in the sixth and got a three-run homer from Gil in the seventh to go ahead 12-5.  Caracas got two in the seventh and two in the eighth to cut the lead to 12-9, but Anzoategui tallied in the top of the ninth to make it 13-9.  In the bottom of the ninth, Caracas put men on first and second with one out, but a fly out put Anzoategui one out away from victory.  Alex Romero singled in a run, another single loaded the bases, a wild pitch scored a run, Bobby Abreu singled in two, and Gonzalez doubled to drive in the winning run.

LA GUAIRA 13, MAGALLANES 5 IN MAGALLANES

La Guaira:  Cesar Suarez was 4-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving one.  Joe Thurston was 4-for-6 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  C. J. Retherford was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring three times and driving in two.

Magallanes:  Robinson Chirinos (Texas) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer (his second), scoring twice.  Mario Lisson (San Francisco) was 1-for-2 with three walks and an RBI.  Ronny Cedeno was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The game:  Alex Cabrera singled in a run in the first and La Guaira scored three more in the second to go ahead 4-0.  A run-scoring ground out put Magallanes on the board in the fourth and Chirinos hit a two-run homer in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.  Thurston hit a two-run single in a three-run sixth to put La Guaira up 7-3, but Magallanes got two of them back in the bottom of the sixth, getting four walks in the inning, to cut the lead to 7-5.  La Guaira took control from there.  Suarez singled in a run in the seventh and two-run doubles by Retherford and Breyvic Valera made it 12-5 after eight.  A wild pitch added one more run in the ninth.
