Kennys Vargas hits a grand slam to carry Mayaguez to the Caribbean Series.

MAYAGUEZ 5, CAGUAS 1 IN MAYAGUEZ

Twins:  Eddie Rosario (Mayaguez) was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 2-for-4 with a grand slam, his third homer.  Daniel Ortiz (Mayaguez) was 0-for-2 with a walk.

Caguas:  Rey Navarro (Cincinnati) was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Michael Nix pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk with one strikeout.

Mayaguez:  Martin Maldonado (Milwaukee) was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Ruben Gotay (Cincinnati) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Martinez struck out ten in eight innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk.

The game:  There was no scoring until the fourth when a walk and a pair of singles, the last an RBI hit by Maldonado, put Mayaguez ahead 1-0.  Caguas tied it with Navarro's homer leading off the seventh.  In the eighth, Rosario walked with one out and took second on a ground out.  An intentional walk was followed by an accidental walk to load the bases.  Vargas then hit a grand slam to put Mayaguez ahead 5-1.  Caguas went down in order in the ninth.

PLAYOFF SERIES

Mayaguez wins the Puerto Rican League championship, defeating Caguas four games to two.  Mayaguez will move on to the Caribbean Series.
