Batting stars: Levi Michael was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run. Dalton Hicks was 2-for-5 with a double. Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Pitching star: Jason Wheeler pitched six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Opposition stars: Kes Carter was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Patrick Leonard was 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run (his second), scoring twice. Marty Gantt was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.
The game: It looked good for a while. Fort Myers broke a scoreless tie in the third when Adam Brett Walker II singled in a run. Another run scored on a ground out to make it 2-0 after three. Charlotte got on the board in the fifth when Gantt doubled and Carter singled and tied it in the sixth on Leonard's home run. In the eighth, the Miracle loaded the bases with none out. A force out retired one, Kepler hit an RBI single and a sacrifice fly made it 4-2. The lead was short-lived, because in the bottom of the eighth, a two-out RBI single by Gantt was followed by a three-run homer by Carter to put the Stone Crabs up 6-4. Michael got a leadoff single in the ninth, but a double play took him off the bases.
Of note: Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run. Walker II was I-for-IV with a run and an RBI.
SOUTH BEND 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Batting stars: Bryan Haar was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth. Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run (his fifth), scoring twice. Bo Altobelli was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.
Pitching stars: Josue Montanez struck out six in 2.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks. Christian Powell struck out four in 2.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit and two walks.
Opposition stars: Daniel Palka was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in two. Stryker Trahan was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one. Jamie Westbrook was 2-for-6 with a double and two runs.
The game: South Bend took control early, starting the game with a walk, two singles, a double, and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead. Garver led off the second with a home run to cut the lead to 3-1, but RBI singles by Palka and Breland Almadova in the third made it 5-1. It was 6-1 after seven, but Cedar Rapids got back into the game in the eighth. Haar hit a two-run homer, a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with none out, and a bases-loaded walk cut the lead to 6-4. A double play scored one more, but it also killed the rally, as a ground out ended the inning. The Silver Hawks added a run in the ninth and the Kernels did not get a hit the rest of the game.
Of note: Zach Larson was 0-for-4. Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4. Starter Ryan Eades struck out five in three innings, but surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks.
