Minor Details: Games of May 8

Two complete games, one of which results in a win.  New Britain lets one get away.  Two more walks for Ivory Thomas.

COLUMBUS 5, ROCHESTER 1 IN COLUMBUS

Batting star:  Eric Farris was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

PItching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Jesus Aguilar was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Giovanny Urshula was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Trevor Bauer struck out nine in 7.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.

The game:  Columbus scored once in the first.  Rochester tied it in the fifth on an RBI single by Farris.  In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Clippers struck for four.  Two singles opened the inning.  Aguilar drove in two with a one-out double and with two out, Urshula hit a two-run homer.  The Red Wings only had two baserunners in the final four innings.

Of note:  James Beresford was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Parmelee was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-4 with a double.  Wilkin Ramirez was 0-for-4.  Scott Diamond pitched a complete game, and outside of the fifth inning he pitched well.  Still, his line is eight innings, five runs, nine hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

BOWIE 6, NEW BRITAIN 5 IN BOWIE

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), scoring  three times and driving in two.  Daniel Ortiz was 3-for-4 with a run.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Sean Gilmartin pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Cole Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Sharlon Schoop was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Niuman Romero was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Dariel Alvarez was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  A Kyle Knudson two-run single in the fourth tied the game at three.  There was no more scoring until the eighth, when a double, two singles, and a double play resulted in two New Britain runs to give the Rock Cats a 5-3 lead.  In the bottom of the eighth, a single, two walks, and an error cut the lead to 5-4.  With two down, the recap tells us that Schoop "singles on a pop up to first baseman Kennys Vargas".  Somehow, two runs scored to give Bowie a 6-5 lead.  New Britain put men on first and third with one out in the ninth, but a double play ended the game.

Of note:  Corey Wimberly was 0-for-4.  Nate Hanson was 1-for-5.

FORT MYERS 4, JUPITER 2 IN JUPITER

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Mike Gonzales was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  David Hurlbut pitched a complete game, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Viosergy Rosa was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Terrence Dayleg was 2-for-4 with a run.

The game:  Fort Myers got all the runs they needed in the first inning, as Gonzales singled in two and Walker II doubled in one to make it 3-0.  A pair of errors resulted in a Jupiter run in the bottom of the first, but the Miracle got the run back in the second on a double steal of second and home.  Hurlbut took it from there.  The only time the Hammerheads got anything going against him was in the fourth, when a pair of doubles opened the inning to cut the lead to 4-2.  An infield single put men on first and second, but a double play ended the threat and Jupiter never had another one.

Of note:  Levi Michael was in the starting lineup as the first batter of the game.  He apparently was officially in the game, but was pinch-hit for due to an injured foot.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Max Kepler was 0-for-2 with two walks.

WISCONSIN 11, CEDAR RAPIDS 7 IN WISCONSIN

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer (his second) and three runs.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Ivory Thomas was 0-for-3 with two walks and a run.

Pitching star:  Brandon Bixler struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Chris McFarland was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), a double, and a walk, scoring three times.  Clint Coulter was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer (his seventh) and two walks, scoring twice.  David Denson was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer (his third) and a walk, scoring twice.

The game:  Cedar Rapids scored two in the second, but Jose Pena's two-run homer capped a three-run bottom of the second to give Wisconsin a 3-2 lead.  Kanzler hit a two-run homer in the third to put the Kernels back on top 4-3, but the Timber Rattlers again responded in the bottom of the inning with Coulter's two-run homer.  In the fourth, Denson's three-run homer capped a four-run inning to give Wisconsin a 9-4 lead.  The closest Cedar Rapids came to getting back into the game was the sixth.  A single, a hit batsman, another single, another hit batsman, and one more single cut the lead to 10-7.  A walk loaded the bases with two out, but a fly out ended the inning.  The Kernels did not threaten to get back into the game again.

Of note:  J. D. Williams was 2-for-5.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-4.  Zach Larson was 1-for-4.  Starter Felix Jorge pitched only 3.2 innings, surrendering eight runs on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout.  Ivory Thomas now has twenty walks in twelve games.
