May 17, 2014: Better Luck

Yesterday was one to forget, as I started with the most bizarre phone conversation I've ever had with a customer over the phone (he went from zero to RAGE without warning about five minutes into the call and legitimately threatened bodily harm, completely misdirecting his hostility; my continued civility and attempts to help seemed to make him angrier, as he just wanted to fight) and ended with my car dying about half a mile from home, where I ended up having to walk a good distance to pick up some antifreeze.

  1. Update on my Werewolf game.

First.... it was AWESOME! We had a total of 60 people for the game. We split into 2 villages and then merged once we had about 12 in each. Sadly, I was the last villager killed before the "merge." I was so mad... I wanted to keep playing.
We played with cursed, who start as villagers, but then turn to wolves if the wolves choose to kill them in the night. With about 15 people left and 3 wolves, the wolves targeted the cursed, who was someone the seer had avowed as a villager. I thought the wolves had it. However, the cursed girl changed her demeanor and someone picked up on it. The villagers ended up winning with 7 still alive.

It was quite an experience. A lot of fun with such a large number.

  2. According to bref, 4 of the 20 defensive seasons of all time by WAR occurred last year. Andrelte Simmons had the best ever, at 5.4 wins just on his defense. Gomez, Machado, and Parra are also there. There are two more from 2013 in the top 100. Anyone know why last year was an outlier? Was replacement level defense worse in 2013?

    1. Bias I think. BR uses DRS by BIS for its defense and BIS didn't start tracking balls in play until 2002. Before that, BR uses TotalZone and it's been shown that TZ tends to over regress defense to the mean. Plus, with increased use of shifts and more knowledge would lead to turning more balls into outs now.

  3. This is the latest the Twins have been at least .500 since 2010. Last year they were 18-18 on May 14 but then lost the next nine.

went on to win 90 games that year!

  4. Has anyone noticed that Troy Tulowitzki is having a monster year?

    .389/.497 /.740/1.237 OPS+219

      1. I believe sean mentioned it, so I was thinking about it this morning and decided to look up league leaders. I had no idea and its a little sad how little attention he seems to be getting.

        1. meanwhile, we noticed that Dozier has double digit HR's, but the Twins' site pointed out he's the first this year with double digit HRs and stolen bases this year.

        2. What brought it to my attention is that I was curious on how Justin Morneau is doing (good!) and saw those eye popping numbers.

      2. Great defense at a premium position tends to do that. Oh, and having an OPS+ over 200.

      1. Newark airport? Suddenly the two hours I was stuck in a Cracker Barrel parking lot with my sputtering car don't seem so bad.

            1. I'm hanging out at the Albuquerque sun port at the moment. They've just told a group of folks that they're in for at least an hour delay while they search the plane for a missing bag. No bueno.

            2. Flight supposed to leave at 6:00 but it's 5:35 and no plane at gate. #notgonnahappen

              1. Ended up home by 8:30. I was on a commuter sized plane on United so they checked my carry on at the gate. Mine was the very last one to come up the conveyor to the jetway. The crew was coming off the plane commenting on the flight and it's lateness and someone said that considering the number of cancellations lately, they were just glad the flight went off at all. United Airlines, people!

  5. As I was researching for a post on the lack of power in the Twins organization (thanks for the topic Beau) I came upon this little trivia nugget.

    Warning: this is depressing.

Since 1991 when they were exactly league average with 140 team home runs, the Twins have been above the league average mark for team home runs in exactly one season. Which season was it?

  6. DG, thanks for allowing me reentry to the land of entrapment. Spoons, I'm hanging in your town for about an hour.

Another on time arrival for us air, but plane parked at our gate, natch.

  7. Drew Butera now has an ERA as a pitcher, gave up a 2 run HR
but also record another strikeout- 3 in 2.2 IP for his career!

  8. I see that the Twins play Sand Diego for two games this week. I dont understand the point of two game Interleague series. Isnt the point of Interleague to showcase the opposite league teams and stars?
