Minor Details: Games of July 2

A big day for Doug Bernier.  Fort Myers almost pulls off a miracle.  Lewis Thorpe strikes out too many batters to get the win.

ROCHESTER 8, PAWTUCKET 7 IN PAWTUCKET

Batting stars:  Doug Bernier was 3-for-5 with a home run (his fifth), a triple, and a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Chris Rahl was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Deibinson Romero was 2-for-4 with a home run (his seventh), a double, and a walk.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Ryan Roberts was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Dan Butler was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

The game:  Bernier doubled in a run in the second, Romero homered in the third, and Rahl and Eric Farris delivered RBI singles in the fourth to give Rochester a 4-0 lead.  Butler's two-run double in the bottom of the fourth cut the lead to 4-2.  It was 5-3 after five, and a sacrifice fly narrowed the margin to 5-4 after six.  In the seventh, Bernier hit a two-run homer and Rahl doubled in a run to give the Red Wings an 8-4 advantage.  In the bottom of the ninth, Roberts singled in a run and Travis Shaw hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 8-7.  However, Pawtucket never got the tying run on base as the next three batters went out.

Of note:  Farris was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Chris Herrmann was 0-forr-2 with two walks.  Starter Sean Gilmartin struck out six in five innings but gave up three runs on five hits and three walks.

A line out made one down, but Steranka scored on an infield grounder to end the game.
