Minor Details: Games of July 8

A good game for Alex Meyer!  New Hampshire sweeps a doubleheader!  A big day for J. D. Williams!

ROCHESTER 3, BUFFALO 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Doug Bernier was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Pedro Florimon was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer struck out ten in six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks.  Edgar Ibarra pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Ryan Pressly pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Ryan Goins was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.  A. J. Jimenez was 2-for-4 with a run.  Esmil Rogers pitched 7.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Bernier had an RBI double to start the scoring in the third inning.  Goins had a two-run single in the fifth to put Buffalo ahead 2-1, but Rochester tied it in the bottom of the fifth when Bernier again drove home a run, this time with a single.  It was tied until the eighth, when James Beresford doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly.  The Bisons got a leadoff single in the ninth but did not advance the man past first base.

Of note:  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-4.  Wilkin Ramirez was 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly.

NEW BRITAIN 10, NEW HAMPSHIRE 2 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, scoring twice.  Lance Ray was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Brandon Waring was 1-for-4 with a grand slam, his eighth home run of the season.

Pitching stars:  Adrian Salcedo pitched the two innings before the game was suspended, giving up no runs on two hits.  Jim Fuller struck out three in three innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Kevin Nolan was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his fifth.  Andy Burns was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

The game:  Ray had an RBI triple to put New Britain ahead 2-0 in the first.  In the fourth, the Rock Cats put together two doubles and three singles to score three times and take a 5-0 lead.  Mike Kvasnicka singled in a run in the sixth and Waring hit a grand slam in the seventh to make it 10-0 .  Nolan hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shutout.

Of note:  Kvasnicka was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-4 with a run.

NEW BRITAIN 5, NEW HAMPSHIRE 4 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE (SCHEDULED GAME--7 INNNGS)

Batting stars:  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-4 with a home run (his seventh) and two RBIs.  Brandon Waring was 0-for-0 with four walks and a run.  Aaron Hicks was 3-for-4 with a run.

Pitching star:  Daniel Turpen pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Mike McDade was 2-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and two RBIs.  Dalton Pompey was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  K. C. Hobson was 1-for-2 with a home run, his second.

The game:  Kvasnicka led off the game with a home run and Tony Thomas delivered an RBI single to give New Britain a 2-0 lead in the first.  The Rock Cats led 3-0 after three and a half, but homers by McDade and Hobson made it 3-2 after four and an error led to two New Hampshire runs in the fifth, putting the Fisher Cats up 4-3.  In the sixth, Brad Boyer singled in the tying run and Kvasnicka singled in the go-ahead run to make it 5-4 New Britain.  New Hampshire did not get a baserunner after that.

Of note:  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Starter Tyler Duffey pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

FORT MYERS AT PALM BEACH

Rained out.

CEDAR RAPIDS 15, WISCONSIN 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  J. D. Williams was 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, scoring four times and driving in four.  Ryan Walker was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in four.  Alex Swim was 3-for-5 with three runs.

Pitching stars:  Brandon Bixler struck out two in two innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits.  Nick Burdi struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Hudson Boyd pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Taylor Brennan was 2-for-3 with a home run (his tenth) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in three.  Chris McFarland was 2-for-5 with a double.

The game:  It was tied at three after three and a half, but Cedar Rapids scored four in the fourth to take control of the game. Jon Murphy and Mitch Garver each doubled in the inning.  Wisconsin scored in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-4, but Walker hit a two-run double to cap a three-run bottom of the fifth to make the score 10-4 and put it out of reach.

Of note:  Muprhy was 1-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Garver was 2-for-6 with a double and an RBI.  Starter Lewis Thorpe struck out five in four innings, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks.

ELIZABETHTON 9, JOHNSON CITY 3 IN JOHNSON CITY

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Jonatan Hinojosa was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Stephen Gonsalves struck out five in five innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits and three walks.  Keaton Steele struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Josue Montanez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Oscar Mercado was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Jose Godoy was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Blake Drake was 2-for-5 with a double.

The game:  Elizabethton got single runs in the first and second, but Johnson City tied it in the third.  The Twins got three in the fourth, getting RBI singles by Hinojosa and Blake Schmit, to go ahead 5-2.  It was 6-3 after seven when RBI singles by Murphy, Tyler Kuresa, and Tyler Mautner in the eighth but the game out of reach.

Of note:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with two runs.  Kuresa was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

GCL TWINS 2, GCL ORIOLES 1 AT ORIOLES (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Amaurys Minier was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Starter Josh Guyer struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Alexis Tapia pitched two shutout innings, giving one hit with one strikeout.  Eduardo Del Rosario pitched two innings, giving up an unearned run on no hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Yariel Vargas was 1-for-2 with a double and a run.  Lucas Long pitched three shutout innings, allowing three hits with one strikeout.

The game:  Minier doubled home the second run of a two-run first and the Twins made the runs stand up.  The Orioles had only two hits, a single in the first and a double in the fifth.  Their lone run came in the seventh on a hit batsman, a wild pitch, and an error.

Of note:  Dubal Baez was 1-for-3.  Joel Polanco was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Rainis Silva was 0-for-3 with an RBI.

GCL ORIOLES 1, GCL TWINS 0 AT TWINS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)<?h4>

Batting star:  Rainis Silva was 2-for-3.

PItching stars:  Onesimo Hernandez struck out eight in five innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks.  Jhon Silva pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  Trevor Hildenberger struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Jomar Reyes was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Brian Gonzalez struck out two in two innings, giving up one hit.  Patrick Baker struck out four in two innings, giving up two hits.

The game:  The lone run was scored in the fourth, when Reyes doubled, took third on a bunt, and scored on a double play.  The Twins had only four hits, never got more than one runner in an inning, and came closest to scoring in the seventh when Silva singled with two out and took second on a passed ball.

Of note:  Tyree Davis was 1-for-3.  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-3.  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-3.

DSL WHITE SOX 8, DSL TWINS 7 AT WHITE SOX

Batting stars:  Lewin Diaz was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Edgar Herrera was 2-for-5 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Maiker Feliz was 1-for-1 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Daniel Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Carlos Diaz struck out four in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks.

The game:  The Twins trailed 4-3 after six.  In the seventh, Palacios singled in one, Diaz doubled in another, one scored on an error, and a fourth scored on a passed ball to give the Twins a 7-4 advantage.  It didn't last long.  In the bottom of the seventh, Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run double and scored on a Feliz single to tie it at seven.  With two out in the eighth, Ramon Beltre reached on a single-plus-error and scored on a Johan Cruz single to give the White Sox an 8-7 lead.  The Twins put men on first and second with two out in the ninth but could not tie the game.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Junior Amarante was 1-for-5 with a triple and a run.  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in two.  Starter Jose Ramirez pitched three innings, giving up two runs on two hits and five walks with one strikeout.

  1. Meyer threw 96 pitches, the first time over 90 since May 2.

    Hicks up to .279/.400/.410 at AA now. If Buxton moves to AA soon, at least Hicks will have again proven he can handle AA.
