Minor Details: Games of July 23

A dominant performance by Alex Meyer.  A big day for Dalton Hicks.  Gift and Maggi are too much for New Britain.

ROCHESTER 6, DURHAM 5 IN ROCHESTER (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Pedro Florimon was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Doug Bernier was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer struck out eight in six shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks.  Michael Tonkin struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three walks.

Opposition stars:  Nate Karns struck out nine in seven innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and no walks.  Wilson Betemit was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fifteenth) and a walk, scoring twice.  Hak-Ju Lee was 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.

The game:  RBI singles by Nate Hanson and Ramirez gave Rochester a 2-0 lead in the fifth.  Lee delivered a two-run single in the seventh to tie it and a bases-loaded walk in the eighth gave Durham a 3-2 lead.  The Red Wings tied it in the ninth on a run-scoring single by Florimon.  Josmil Pinto singled in a run in the tenth to put Rochester in front, but Betemit homered in the bottom of the tenth to tie the game at four.  In the eleventh, Bernier came through with a two-out two-run double.  The Bulls got one back in the bottom of the eleventh and had men on first and second with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Pinto was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Deibinson Romero was 0-for-5.

ALTOONA 8, NEW BRITAIN 5 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Brandon Waring was 3-for-4 with two home runs, his tenth and eleventh.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4 with a home run, his sixteenth.

Pitching stars:  Mason Melotakis struck out two in a perfect inning.  Matthew Summers pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Gift Ngoepe was 3-for-5 with a home run (his eighth) and two RBIs.  Drew Maggi was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Keon Broxton was 3-for-5 with a home run (his tenth), scoring twice.

The game:  Already leading 1-0, Altoona opened the second with three straight homers.  Broxton, Ngoepe, and Carlos Paulino all went deep to start the inning, and a Josh Bell RBI single later in the inning made it 5-0.  New Britain never really got back into the game.  Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a two-run double in the eighth to cut the lead to 8-5, but the Rock Cats did not bring the tying run to the plate.

Of note:  Mike Kvasnicka was 1-for-4 with a run.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Starter Pat Dean pitched four innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 9, BREVARD COUNTY 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Dalton Hicks was 3-for-4 with two home runs (his seventh and eighth) and a walk, scoring three times and driving in four.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Adam Brett Walker Ii was 1-for-4 with a home run (his twenty-first) and a walk, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Brett Lee pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  B. J. Hermsen pitched two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Nathan Orf was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Alfredo Rodriguez was 2-for-4.

The game:  Hicks hit a two-run homer in the first and Walker II hit a solo shot in the third to put Fort Myers up 3-0.  An error, two walks, a single, another walk, and a hit batsman plated three runs in the fifth to put the Miracle in control of the game.  Brevard County got two in the top of the sixth, but Fort Myers scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to put it out of reach.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-5.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-5 with two runs.  Nate Roberts was 1-for-5 with a run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, BOWLING GREEN 2 IN BOWLING GREEN

Batting stars:  Tanner Vavra was 3-for-4 with a home run.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Aaron Slegers struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk.  Jake Reed struck out six of the seven men he faced, with the seventh reaching on an error.  Nick Burdi struck out two in a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Isaac Gil struck out three in three shutout innings, allowing two hits.  Julian Ridings was 2-for-4.

The game:  Bowling Green scored first, getting an RBI single by Darryl George in the second.  Cedar Rapids went in front in the third on solo homers by Vavra and Logan Wade.  The Hot Rods tied it in the bottom of the third, but the Kernels got two in the fourth and two in the fifth to take control of the game.  Mitch Garver homered to put Cedar Rapids ahead in the fourth.  Bowling Green got only one hit after the third inning and eight of their last ten batters struck out.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-5 with a run.  Wade was 1-for-5 with a home run (his third) and two runs.  Garver was 1-for-5 with a home run, his thirteenth.  Alex Swim was 2-for-4.

ELIZABETHTON 5, BLUEFIELD 2 IN BLUEFIELD

Batting stars:  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Pat Kelly was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Alex Real was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Matt Batts struck out eight in five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.  C. K. Irby struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Kuo Hua Lo struck out two in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Ryan Borucki struck out seven in five innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks.  Conor Fisk struck out five in three shutout innings, allowing two hits.  Dan Jansen was 3-for-4 with a home run, his third.

The game:  Back-to-back two-out doubles by Kelly and Jeremias Pineda gave Elizabethton a 1-0 lead after three.  Jansen's homer tied it in the fourth and Bluefield went ahead 2-1 in the fifth on Aaron Attaway's RBI triple.  It stayed 2-1 until the ninth.  An error and a single put men on first and third with none out, and both scored on a single-plus-error by Kuresa to give the Twins the lead.  Later in the inning, Jorge Fernandez drove home a run with a single and, alone with Real, pulled off a double steal of second and home to give Elizabethton a 5-2 advantage.  The last eleven Blue Jays were retired.

Of note:  Pineda was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4 with a run.  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with a run.

GCL ORIOLES 8, GCL TWINS 1 AT TWINS (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting stars:  Manuel Guzman was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Levi Michael was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Zach Tillery struck out six in 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and two walks.  Callan Pearce pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Jonah Heim was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, driving in three.  Clinton Harwick was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Matt Taylor struck out five in four innings, giving up one run on four hits.

The game:  Heim doubled in a run in the second to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead and the Orioles got four more in the third to take control.  Henry Urrutia singled in one, Heim doubled in two, and one scored on a wild pitch.  The Twins never got back into the game; their lone run came in the sixth when Guzman tripled and scored.

Of note:  Dubal Baez was 0-for-4.  Rainis Silva was 0-for-3.  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-1.  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-3.

GCL ORIOLES 6, GCL TWINS 4 AT ORIOLES (SCHEDULED GAME--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Joel Polanco was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his second.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  An error gave the Twins a run in the first, but the Orioles scored two in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.  Each team scored once in the third to make it 3-2.  In the fourth Polanco hit a two-run homer to give the Twins a 4-3 advantage.  The Orioles got one in the fifth to tie it and two in the sixth to take the lead.  The last ten Twins were retired.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-2.  Starter Josh Guyer pitched 4.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks with no strikeouts.

DSL TWINS 6, DSL REDS 4 AT REDS

Batting stars:  Jhonathan Alvarez was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Moises Gomez struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and three walks.

Opposition stars:  Erick Gabo was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Gabriel Ovalle was 0-for-2 with three walks and two runs.  Jose Veras pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout.

The game:  A wild pitch put the Reds on the board in the first, but the Twins tied it in the second.  The Reds took a 3-1 lead after three.  Alvarez singled in a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2.  It was 4-2 after six.  Morel had an RBI single in the seventh to make it 4-3 and the Twins tied it in the eighth.  In the ninth, RBI singles by Arraez and Edgar Herrera gave the Twins a 6-4 advantage.  The Reds loaded the bases on three walks in the ninth, but a fly out ended the game.

Of note:  Antonio Tovar was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 with a double.  Starter Williams Ramirez struck out five in four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks.
