    1. I was in a hurry this morning, but I wanted to share that Aloe Blacc song. Everyone is probably sick of his "The Man" song being played on every commercial break for a year, but give this one a chance.
      Love Is the Answer

Also of note, I now am approaching 650 GBV and related songs out of approximately 7700 on my IPod.

    1. HipsterAMR says that "Half" is the best thing Soundgarden ever recorded.
Well, of the stuff that made the albums.
There's this great song about NASCAR racing as a metaphor for the ratrace of modern life, "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard"
And the Black Sabbath cover that replaces the lyrics with words from a speech by Sealth (Chief Seattle).

Zack, do you like Danny Brown? I've been hit or miss on him in the past, but his new song with Rustie is pretty awesome.

    1. I'm definitely a fan of Danny. I didn't quite go as nuts for XXX as people (and I liked it a ton) but I did really really like Old. Honestly though I think he works best in small doses. I absolutely adore his guest spots. I'll have to check this track out!

      1. I think he works best in small doses

This is my exact opinion on him. I always like a song or two, and I always dig his guest spots, but both of his albums are just too damn long.

        1. I will echo this opinion. I've tried several times to listen to his albums, but they just don't work for me. But I'm completely obsessed with his verse on A$AP Rocky's "1 Train"

            1. That song goes so hard. Even the guys I normally don't like at all (Yelawolf, Action Bronson) kill it.

              1. That song is absolutely ridiculous. One of my favorites last year. I kinda forget about it because the A$AP Ferg record was so god damn good. That was my preferred A$AP mob joint.

  4. 1. Weezer - "Hold Me" - Make Believe
    2. Wilco - "You And I" - Wilco [The Album]
    3. The Flaming Lips* - "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" - At War With The Mystics

    9. A Silent Film - "Reaching The Potential" - Sand & Snow
    10. Yo La Tengo - "Tighten Up" - Yo La Tengo Is Murdering The Classics
    B. They Might Be Giants - "Istanbul" - Flood

    * Tickets are on sale at 10 AM for The Flaming Lips at First Ave on Sep 14. I was thinking about going but the $49 price tag might stop me...unless there is some WGOM representation...

    *Notes:
    1. An album of Everly Brothers covers.
    2. Ornette Coleman cover
    4. Preview Track
    5. I put old summer mixes on my iPod for the summer. This one was a dubious choice, and I regret it. Mostly just nostalgia for “Countrry Grrammarr” and “Hot in Herre”. This is icky.
    7. As "The Subliminal Kid, Peder was one of the producers of the pseudonymous solo album Fever Ray from the Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson (but not the producer of any of my favorite songs on that album). (Not to be confused with DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, an American born Paul D. Miller, who is not to be confused with other Pauls Miller.) I haven't decided what I think of this yet.
    d. "Conk-a-lee"
    9. This song is Osasto-level Pan_Sonic track (hard and thumping). Nice sawtooth buzz through it that might foreshadow Mika Vainio's post-Pan_Sonic Life (...It Eats You Up).
    T. An album of Doug Sahm covers (from bands like the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados). This song is a Sir Douglas Quintet cover.

    1. d. "Conk-a-lee"
I looked at the track, imagined myself in a duck blind, and understood what you'd written...is describing a bird song in words like that onomatopoeia, or is it called something else?

      1. I don't know what that's called.
        Half onomatopœia, half mnemonic.
        "Conk-a-lee" isn't mine, I've read it places.

        Other similar classics:
American Robin "Cheer Up Cheerily" (I can't hear it)
        Wild Turkey "Gobble, Gobble"
Red-Eyed Vireo "Look at me, here I am, up here, in the tree"
American Goldfinch "Potato Chip" (for the flight call)
        Willow Flycatcher "Fitz-Bew"
        Alder Flycatcher "Free Beer"
        Acadian Flycatcher "Pizza"

        Black-capped chickadee "Chicka-dee-dee-dee" and "Spring-Time" (a whistled "Fee-Bee")
White-Throated Sparrow "O Sam Peabody Peabody Peabody" or "O Sweet Canada Canada Canada"

        Mallard "Quack"
        Canada Goose "Honk"
        American Crow "Caw"
        Blue Jay "Wheedle" (among others)

          1. I think you misunderstand.
"Classic" meaning been-around-forever in bird books.
            Not "Golden Classics"

*I forgot this sampled Kavinsky & Lovefoxxx's "Nightfall". I was really confused when Bun B started rapping.

    1. Good luck on the tickets.

I finally checked out Childish Gambino. I like it. I wouldn't have given it time had he not kept showing up on your list. He's much less gimicky than I expected.

      1. He's much less gimicky than I expected.

This is the first exposure I had to him. With the title being "Freaks and Geeks" and him being, up until then, only Troy Barnes on "Community", I expected gimmicky as well. I was mistaken.

        httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-B3aO8XzBE

He's not the best rapper alive, but I enjoy his work. Especially Camp. I know I'm not a poor black kid in a fancy white school, but the idea of being an outcast looking for his place in the world of high school & college really resonated.

          1. I haven't heard enough to have a deep opinion of it, but it's solid. Better than R O Y A L T Y, I think. When he performed it at SXSW it was insane.

B1. Bad Liver And A Broken Heart -- Tom Waits -- Small Change

    Notes:
5 and 8 are both better than Creep
10 -- Sebadoh coming to Entry September 27. I'd be right in front but I i'll be in London. You should go in my stead.
4 and 7 -- I was 15 when Van Halen 1 was released, which is the perfect age to first hear that album. I still listen to it 36 years later.
