Minor Details: Games of August 7

A fine start by Sean Gilmartin.  Matt continues to miss Batts.  A big day for Nick Gordon.

ROCHESTER 7, INDIANAPOLIS 0 AT INDIANAPOLIS

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-3 with a home run (his seventh) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in three.  James Beresford was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Sean Gilmartin pitched six innings, giving up three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  Lester Oliveros struck out three in two perfect innings.  Deolis Guerra struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition star:  Vin Mazzaro struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

The game:  Rochester took the lead in the first inning.  A single, an error, and a walk filled the bases with one out.  Ortiz singled in one, Wilkin Ramirez doubled in two, and a sacrifice fly made it 4-0.  Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the third to make it 6-0 and Beresford doubled and scored in the fifth to round out the scoring.  Indianapolis put on man on third base with two out and had men on first and second with two out in the sixth.  Their last ten batters were retired.

Of note:  Doug Bernier was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Chris Herrmann wsa 0-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

AKRON 3, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN AKRON

Batting stars:  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4.

Pitching star:  Tyler Duffey pitched 7.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Will Roberts pitched seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Ronny Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  There was no scoring until the fifth.  Akron had not had a baserunner for four innings, but they opened the fifth with three singles, loading the bases.  A sacrifice fly and a slow ground out brought home two runs.  New Britain got on the board in the seventh on a walk, a double, and a ground out.  The Rubber Ducks got the run back in the ninth when Rodriguez hit a leadoff double and scored on pair of bunts.  The last eight Rock Cats were retired.

Of note:  Mike Kvasnicka was 1-for-4.  Nate Hanson was 1-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-4.

FORT MYERS 6, ST. LUCIE 2 IN ST. LUCIE

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a home run, his XXIIIrd.  Nick Goodrum was 2-for-4 with two runs.

Pitching stars:  Ethan Mildren pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Tyler Jones pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  D. J. Johnson pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Cam Maron was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Jared King was 1-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Gavin Cecchini was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.

The game:  Dalton Hicks had an RBI double in a two-run first to give Fort Myers a 2-0 lead.  Michael singled in a run in the second and did it again in the fourth to make it 4-0.  A solo homer by Cecchini in the fifth and one by King in the sixth cut the lead to 4-2.  A pair of errors brought home a Miracle run in the seventh and Walker II homered in the eighth to secure the victory.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 1-for-5 with a run.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-5.  Hicks was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a double.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, KANE COUNTY 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Engelb Vielma was 3-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Matt Batts struck out eight in six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks.  Jared Wilson pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.  Jake Reed struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Duane Underwood struck out seven in six innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk.  Chesny Young was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Max Murphy doubled in a run in the second to give Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead.  In the fourth, Kane County got a triple, a double, and another triple to take a 2-1 advantage.  An error led to a Cougars run in the sixth to make it 3-1.  In the eighth, Vielma singled, took second on a passed ball, went to third on an error, and scored on a ground out.  Later in the inning, Ryan Walker singled, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Garver single to tie the score.  The Kernels led off the tenth with back-to-back doubles by Garver and Byran Haar to win the game.

Of note:  Walker was 1-for-5 with a run.  Haar was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Alex Swim was 1-for-4 with a run.  Murphy was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

ELIZABETHTON 12, DANVILLE 0 IN ELIZABETHTON<?h4>

Batting stars:  Jorge Fernandez was 4-for-5 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in three.  Nick Gordon was 3-for-6 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in three.  Tanner English was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  John Curtiss struck out eight in five innings, giving up four hits and two walks.  Kuo Hua Lo struck out three in two innings, giving up no hits and no walks.  Samuel Clay struck out two in two innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  None.

The game:  In the third, Fernandez tripled in two and scored on an Alex Real single to give Elizabethton a 3-0 lead.  English singled in a run in the fourth and the Twins put together a five-run fifth to put the game out of reach.  Austin Diemer had a two-run double and Gordon had a two-run triple in the inning.  Danville put a man on third base with two out in the first inning, but it was the only time they did so.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-5 with a run.  Trey Vavra was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

GCL ORIOLES 6, GCL TWINS 5 AT ORIOLES

Batting star:  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer, his sixth.

Pitching stars:  Brandon Easton struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks.  Zack Jones struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Yariel Vargas was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.  Jonah Heim was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Ronarsy Ledesma was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  An error put the Twins on the board in the first, but a two-run single-plus-error by Ledesma gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead after two.  In the third, Zack Granite walked, stole second, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to tie it at two.  It stayed 2-2 until the sixth, when Jarrard Poteete singled in a run to give the Twins a 3-2 advantage.  Randolph Gassaway led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to tie it at three.  Later in the inning, a walk, a single, a bunt, a sacrifice fly, and RBI singles by Clinton Harwick and Daniel Franco put the Orioles up 6-3.  With two out in the ninth, an error was followed by a two-run homer by Minier to cut the lead to 6-5.  An error put the tying run on base, but T. J. White was thrown out trying to score from first on a Rainis Silva single to end the game.

Of note:  Corey Wimberly was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Granite was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  White was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Manuel Guzman was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 4, DSL PADRES 3 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Jose Ramirez struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk.  Jose Martinez pitched four innings, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Westhers Magdaleno was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Eisler Cordova pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and four walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  RBI singles by Dayon Olmo and Jose Savinon gave the Padres a 2-0 lead in the third.  In the fifth, two walks, an error, an RBI single by Luis Martinez, and a ground out gave the Twins a 3-2 advantage.  Derwin Pomare tripled and scored in the seventh to tie it at three, but the Twins got the lead back in the bottom of the seventh when Lewin Diaz doubled in a run.  The Padres did not advance a man past first base after that.

Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Diaz was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
