Minor Details: Games of August 8

Brett Lee continues to dominate at Fort Myers.  Joe Mauer gets three hits for Cedar Rapids.  A big day for Nick Gordon.

ROCHESTER 11, LOUISVILLE 4 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring twice and driving in three.  Doug Bernier was 3-for-5 with a home run (his sixth) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Chris Herrmann was 2-for-4 with a triple and a hit-by-pitch, scorig twice and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Mark Hamburger pitched 6.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks with one strikeout.  Michael Tonkin retired all four batters he faced with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Andrew Lambo was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Brent Morel was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

The game:  Bernier homered in the first and Aaron Hicks homered in the second to give Rochester a 2-0 lead.  The Red Wings had a man on first with two out in the fifth when Herrmann tripled, Pinto doubled, Daniel Ortiz doubled, and Wilkin Ramirez singled to make the score 6-0.  Pinto had a two-run single in the sixth to increase the margin to 8-0.  Indianapolis tried to get back into the game, getting three in the seventh and one in the eighth, but Rochester scored three in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Hicks was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.  Pedro Florimon was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.

ERIE 6, NEW BRITAIN 0 IN ERIE

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguewas 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Alex Wimmers struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Jim Fuller struck out two in two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Wilsen Palacios pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and one walk with six strikeouts.  Dixon Machado was 2-for-3 with a home run (his third) and a walk, driving in four.  Francisco Martinez was 3-for-4 with two runs.

The game:  Machado hit a two-run homer in the second.  Martinez singled in one and Machado singled in two to make it 5-0 after three.  Dean Green singled in the game's final run in the fourth.  New Britain did not advance a man past second base.

Of note:  Brad Boyer was 1-for-4.  Nate Hanson was 0-for-4.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-4 with a double.  Starter Pat Dean pitched three innings, giving up six runs on twelve hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 4, ST. LUCIE 0 IN ST. LUCIE

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching star:  Brett Lee pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Kevin McGowan pitched 6.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts.  L. J. Mazzilli was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Gavin Cecchini was 2-for-4.

The game:  There was no score until the seventh, when Harrison opened the inning with a walk and scored on a Stuart Turner two-out triple.  Fort Myers took control with three in the ninth, scoring one on a wild pitch, getting another on a double steal of second and home, and tallying the third on a Kepler triple.  St. Lucie only once got a man as far as third base--that came in the third inning, when they had the bases loaded with two out.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 1-for-4.  Byron Buxton was 0-for-4.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

KANE COUNTY 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Joe Mauer was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Max Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.   Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching star:  Josue Montanez struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Jacob Rogers was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Danny Lockhart was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Cael Brockmeyer was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The game;  Rogers hit a three-run double before a man was retired, giving Kane County the early lead.  A pair of sacrifice flies in the second cut the lead to 3-2.  It stayed there until the sixth, when Lockhart's two-run double gave the Cougars a 5-2 advantage.  Brockmeyer singled in a run in the eighth to make it 6-2.  In the ninth, Cedar Rapids mounted a comeback.  A single and a hit batsman opened the inning.  Mauer singled in one and Mitch Garver doubled in two to cut the lead to 6-5.  A one-out walk and a two-out hit batsman loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Garver was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Alex Swim was 2-for-5 with a double.  Starter Stephen Gonsalves struck out five in four innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk.

ELIZABETHTON 7, DANVILLE 0 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 3-for-4 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, scoring once and driving in one.  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-3 with two walks and three runs.  Brett Doe was 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Michael Cederoth pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one hit and four walks with four strikeouts.  C. K. Irby struck out four in 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Cameron Booser struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Yeudi Grullon was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Joseph Daris was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The game:  No big innings, but the Twins scored in five of the eight innings in which they batted.  A run scored on a ground out in the first, Gordon and Pineda each had an RBI single in the second, two scored in the fourth on a balk and another Gordon RBI single, a run scored in the sixth on an error, and Doe tripled in a run in the seventh.  Danville twice got a man to third base, once in the third and once in the seventh.

Of note:  Tanner English was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Trey Vavra was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Jorge Fernandez was 0-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

GCL TWINS 3, GCL RED SOX 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Joel Ramirez was 2-for-3 with a run.  Ruar Verkerk was 1-for-1 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Josh Guyer pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Leonel Zazueta struck out two in two innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Jhon Silva pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition star:  Victor Acosta was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

The game:  Nelson Molina tripled in a run in the third to give the Twins a 1-0 lead.  In the fifth, Darwin Pena singled in the tying run and the go-ahead run scored on a double play, putting the Red Sox up 2-1.  In the seventh, two singles, two bunts, and an error put the Twins back in front 3-2.  The Red Sox had the tying run on second with two out in the eighth and with one out in the ninth but could not bring him around.

Of note:  Zack Larson was 0-for-2.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-4.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-4.

DSL TWINS 3, DSL DIAMONDBACKS 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Luis Martinez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Roni Tapia was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Moises Gomez started and struck out four in four innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk.  Randolph Perez pitched five innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Yeison Santana struck out seven in 5.1 innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits and two walks.  Gerson Jimenez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.  Jose Ordaz was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

The game:  Jimenez singled in a run in the first and Martinez doubled in a run in the third to make the score 1-1.  Jimenez had another RBI single in the sixth to put the Diamondbacks ahead 2-1.  In the seventh, Jermaine Palacios tied the score with an RBI single.  He then stole second and third and scored on a Tapia single to give the Twins a 3-2 lead.  The Diamondbacks had only one hit in the last three innings, a single with two out in the ninth.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Palacios was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.

    1. I saw last night that Jake got ejected from the game because he was arguing about the pitcher quickpitching
