Minor Details: Games of August 16

A no-hitter for Virgil Vasquez.  A huge day for Reynaldo Rodriguez.  Jose Berrios is having no problem handling AA so far.  We continue to get closer to catching up.

SYRACUSE AT ROCHESTER

Rained out.

NEW BRITAIN 5, HARRISBURG 1 AT NEW BRITAIN (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with two home runs (his seventeenth and eighteenth) and a double, driving in four.  Levi Michael was 2-for-3 with a run.  Mike Gonzales was 2-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out five in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks.  Edgar Ibarra retired all five batters he faced, striking out four.

Opposition stars:  Quincy Latimore was 1-for-1 with a double and two walks, scoring once.  Caleb Ramsey was 1-for-2 with a double.

The game:  Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the second to give New Britain a 2-0 lead.  Nate Hanson singled in a run in the third and Rodriguez homered again in the fourth to make it 4-0.  Harrisburg got on the board in the top of the sixth, but Rodriguez got the run back with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.

Of note:  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-3.  Hanson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-3.

NEW BRITAIN 9, HARRISBURG 0 AT NEW BRITAIN (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer (his ninteenth) and two walks, scoring three times.  Jorge Polanco was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in three.  Mike Gonzales was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring three times.

Pitching star:  Virgil Vasquez pitched a complete game, giving up no hits and no walks.  Yes, it was a no-hitter.  It was nearly a perfect game.  Only one man reached base, when Polanco made an error at the start of the second inning.  The runner did not get past first base.

Opposition star:  Sam Runion retired all five batters he faced, striking out two.

The game:  Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the second and Eddie Rosario had a two-run single later in the inning to give New Britain a 4-0 lead.  Single runs in the third and fourth made it 6-0.  Polanco had a two-run double in a three-run sixth to make the score 9-0.  As we said above, Harrisburg had only one baserunner, when Kevin Keyes reached on an error leading off the second inning.  He did not advance past first base.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Rosario was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Nate Hanson was 0-for-1.

PALM BEACH 4, FORT MYERS 2 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-1 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching star:  Nick Burdi struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Luke Voit was 2-for-4 with a home run (his ninth) and two runs.  David Washington was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.  Bruce Caldwell was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

The game:  Walker II doubled in a run to start the scoring in the first.  The 1-0 lead held up until the fourth, when after two were out, Palm Beach got a single, a walk, and a hit batsman to load the bases and they all scored on a double by Washington.  Fort Myers got one back in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2, but Voit homered in the sixth to make it 4-2.  The Miracle did not get a hit in the last two innings.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3.  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with a double.  Starter Aaron Slegers pitched six innings, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 5, PALM BEACH 0 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-2 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching star:  Matt Tomshaw pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Opposition star:  Mason Katz was 3-for-3 with a double.  Palm Beach had four hits.

The game:  Travis Harrison singled in one and another scored on a sacrifice fly to give Fort Myers a 2-0 lead in the first.  In the third, Hicks had a two-run double and Adam Brett Walker II contributed an RBI single to make it 5-0.  Palm Beach had two on in the second and third but did not advance a man past second base.

Of note:  Harrison was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Walker II was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Max Kepler was 0-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, PEORIA 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.  Ryan Walker was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Pitching stars:  Lewis Thorpe pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Chris Mazza struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Jake Reed struck out four in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Arturo Reyes struck out six in 6.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks.  Justin Ringo was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Rowan Wick was 1-for-2 with two walks.

The game:  Hinojosa singled in a run in the third to open the scoring.  Peoria tied it in the fourth on a Ringo single.  Ringo doubled in a run in the sixth to make it 2-1 Chiefs.  It looked like that might hold up, but in the eighth, Hinojosa delivered a two-run triple and scored on an Engelb Vielma single to give Cedar Rapids a 4-2 lead.  The last nine Peoria batters went out, with the last four striking out.

Of note:  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4.  Alex Swim was 1-for-4.  Max Murphy was 1-for-3.

JOHNSON CITY 9, ELIZABETHTON 5 IN ELIZABETHTON (11 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Jorge Fernandez was 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Pitching star:  Samuel Clay struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.

Opposition stars:  Casey Turgeon was 3-for-6 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Oscar Mercado was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his third.  Carlos Torres was 3-for-6 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Fernandez hit a two-run homer in a three-run first to give Elizabethton the early lead.  Johnson City answered in the third, as Mercado hit a two-run homer in a three-run inning.  A pair of errors led to two Twins runs in the bottom of the third to put the Twins back up 5-3.  In the sixth, the Cardinals scored once on a wild pitch and got an RBI single from Anthony Ray to tie it at five.  There was no more scoring until the eleventh.  A pair of singles opened the inning and an error put Johnson City up 6-5.  An intentional walk was followed by a single-plus-error by Cole Lankford to make the score 8-5.  A sacrifice fly closed out the scoring.  All Elizabethton could manage in the bottom of the eleventh was a two-out walk.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-5 with a run.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-5 with a run.  Tanner English was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Trey Vavra was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk,  Starter Felix Jorge pitched five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

GCL TWINS 2, GCL RED SOX 1 AT TWINS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Dubal Baez was 0-for-1 with two walks and a run.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale struck out five in four innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit and one walk.  Michael Theofanopolous pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Rafael Oliveros was 0-for-1 with two walks and a run.  Pat Goetze pitched two shutout innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout.

The game:  Luis Alexander Basabe had an RBI single in the third to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.  The Twins got two in the bottom of the third on a walk, a two-base error, and a pair of sacrifice flies.  And that was it for the scoring.  The best the Red Sox could do after that was a pair of two-out singles in the sixth.

Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 0-for-2 with a run.  Zack Larson was 0-for-2 with an RBI.

GCL TWINS 11, GCL RED SOX 10 AT RED SOX (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Jarrard Poteete was 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk, driving in four.  Nelson Molina was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Ariel Montesino was 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Miles Nordgren pitched five shutout innings of relief, giving up no hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Reyson Zoquiel pitched a perfect inning.  Seth Wagner pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition star:  Ben Moore was 1-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.

The game:  Three singles, a double, a walk, and two errors resulted in four runs for the Red Sox in the first.  Joel Ramirez hit an RBI double in a three-run second that cut the lead to 4-3, but in the bottom of the second, two doubles, two singles, and three more errors gave the Red Sox a six-run inning and a 10-3 advantage.  The Twins got back into the game in the fourth, getting four runs on one hit, five walks, a hit batsman, and three errors.  The Twins actually got a rally by hitting in the eight to take the lead, as Montesino tripled in a run and Poteete hit a three-run homer.  The last eight Red Sox were retired.  The two teams combined for nine errors, five by the Twins.  Seven of the Red Sox runs were unearned.

Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-4 with a walk.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Starter Alexis Tapia pitched only one inning, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with one strikeout.

DSL REDS 5, DSL TWINS 4 AT REDS

Batting stars:  Luis Martinez was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-3 with a home run (his fourth) and a walk.

Pitching star:  Robener Cabrera retired all thirteen batters he faced in relief, striking out four.

Opposition stars:  Alfredo Mena pitched four innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Franklin Vargas was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer.  Raul Wallace was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

The game:  The Twins made three errors in the first inning to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.  The Twins tied it at one after three.  In the fourth, Wallace hit a two-run single and Vargas followed with a two-run homer to give the Reds a 5-1 advantage.  It stayed 5-1 until the seventh, when Robert Molina brought home two with a double.  Diaz homered in the eighth to make the score 5-4 but the Twins could not get a man past first base after that.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-4.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch.  Starter Juan Herrera pitched 3.2 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks with one strikeout.
