Mexican Matchups: Games of October 25

An easy win for Obregon.  An eighth-inning rally lifts Jalisco.  Mazatlan nearly blows a big lead, but puts it away in the ninth.

OBREGON 9, LOS MOCHIS 1 IN OBREGON

Twins:  Corey Wimberly was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Obregon.

Los Mochis:  Juan Carlos Gamboa was 3-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Emmanuel Avila was 2-for-3.  Oswaldo Pacheco struck out three in 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up five hits and a walk.

Obregon:  Carlos Valencia was 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs.  Jake Smolinski (Texas) was 2-for-2 with a home run (his second) and four RBIs.  Arturo Lopez pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

The game:  With Obregon already leading 4-0, Valencia hit a two-run homer in the fifth followed by Smolinski's three-run blast, making it 9-0 after five.

JALISCO 3, MEXICALI 1 IN JALISCO

Mexicali:  Brock Peterson (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Marco Antonio Duarte pitched seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Jalisco:  Japhet Amador was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Leo Heras (Houston) was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Marco Tovar struck out six in six innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.

The game:  Heras' RBI double in the eighth broke a 1-1 tie.  He came around to score on Amador's single.  Mexicali did not get a hit after the seventh.

NAVOJOA 4, HERMOSILLO 1 IN HERMOSILLO

Navojoa:  Reggie Abercrombie was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer (his second) and two RBIs.  Alejandro Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with a home run.  Alejandro Soto struck out nine in seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks.

Hermosillo:  Cole Garner was 1-for-3 with a double.  Carlos Alberto Gastelum was 1-for-3 with a run.  Jesus Castillo pitched two perfect innings.

The game:  A two-run fourth gave Navojoa a 3-0 lead.  Hermosillo scored one in the sixth and had the tying run on base, but a caught stealing ended the inning.

MAZATLAN 9, CULIACAN 4 IN CULIACAN

Mazatlan:  Jose Manuel Orozco was 2-for-6 with a two-run homer and a double, scoring twice.  Hector Paez was 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.  Amilcar Gaxiola pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Culican:  J. C. Linares was 2-for-3 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Joey Meneses (Atlanta) was 3-for-4 with a double.  Jose Meraz pitched 1.2 scoreless innings despite allowing two hits and a walk.

The game:  Olmo Rosario had a two-run single in a four-run fourth that put Mazatlan ahead 6-0.  Culiacan pecked away, scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth to cut the lead to 6-4, but Orozco hit a two-run homer to cap a three-run ninth that put the game out of reach.
