Minor Details: Games of May 2

One-run games worked a lot better.  A walkoff error wins it for the Red Wings.  Byron Buxton stays hot for the Lookouts.  Comeback extra-inning wins for the Miracle and the Kernels.  A sweep for the Twins!

ROCHESTER 4, NORFOLK 3 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Eric Fryer was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk.  Argenis Diaz was 2-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers pitched seven innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  Lester Oliveros pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jayson Nix was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Paul Janish was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks.  T. J. McFarland pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Nix' three-run double-plus-error put the Tides ahead 3-1 in the top of the sixth.  Jose Martinez singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth and Eddie Rosario delivered an RBI single in the seventh to tie it 3-3.  In the ninth, Doug Bernier led off with a double and scored on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt to win the game.  The Tides did not get a man past first base after the sixth.

Of note:  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-4.  Rosario was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Brock Peterson was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

CHATTANOOGA 6, JACKSONVILLE 3 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Byron Buxton was 3-for-5 with two triples and a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out nine in six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks.  Cole Johnson struck out four in two innings, giving up two hits.  Zack Jones pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Sharif Othman was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  David Adams was 3-for-4.  Craig Stem struck out three in three shutout innings, allowing a walk.

The game:  Buxton and Polanco opened the game with back-to-back doubles, leading to a three-run first and a lead the Lookouts would never relinquish.  In the sixth, however, a single, a walk, and two more singles gave the Suns a pair of runs that cut the lead to 4-3.  It stayed 4-3 until the eighth, when Buxton tripled in a run and scored on Polanco's single to make it 6-3.  The Suns did not get a man past first base after the sixth inning.

Of note:  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.

FORT MYERS 4, CHARLOTTE 3 IN CHARLOTTE (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Marcus Knecht was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Alex Swim was 4-for-5 with a run.  Tanner Vavra was 2-for-5.

Pitching stars:  Madison Boer struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up only a walk.  Alex Muren pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Todd Van Steensel pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Joey Rickard was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Juniel Querecuto was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Ryne Stanek pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Querecuto's two-run double in the fourth put the Stone Crabs up 3-1.  It stayed there until the eighth, when RBI singles by Swim and Knecht tied it 3-3.  In the eleventh, the Miracle had two out and none on, but got a walk, a single, and an RBI single by Engelb Vielma to go up 4-3.  The Stone Crabs went down in order in the bottom of the eleventh.  The only two hits the Stone Crabs got were in the fourth inning.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 0-for-5 with a walk and a run.  Niko Goodrum was 0-for-5.  Ryan Eades pitched five innings, giving up three runs on two hits and five walks with four strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, CLINTON 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (13 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  T. J. White was 2-for-4 with a triple and two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.  Nick Gordon was 3-for-6 with two RBIs.  Brett Doe was 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Trevor Hildenberger struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up only one hit.  C. K. Irby struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up only a walk.  Cameron Booser struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Daniel Torres was 1-for-4 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Nelson Ward was 2-for-6 with a walk and a run.  Luis Liberato was 2-for-6 with a walk and a run.

The game:  The Kernels led 3-2 after three but the LumberKings got one in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to go up 6-3.  White's RBI single and a sacrifice fly cut it to 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, but there was no more scoring until the ninth, when Gordon singled with two out to drive home the tying run.  In the tenth Tanner English hit a one-out triple but was thrown out trying to make it an inside-the-park home run.  In the thirteenth, White led off with a triple and scored on Pat Kelly's sacrifice fly.

Of note:  English was 1-for-5 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Zach Larson was 0-for-5 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Fernandez was 0-for-6.  Max Murphy was 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Michael Cederoth struck out seven in four innings, giving up three unearned runs on three hits and five walks.
