Not just a Star Wars reference, but a Simpsons one as well. Well done.
I'm a double nerd!
Star Wars. Right up there with three days of the NFL Draft in terms of grabbing my interest.
For a sport you ignore, you sure talk about ignoring it a lot. 😉
I actively ignore it. I also ignore college lacrosse, but that's a lot easier to ignore since it isn't on TV ALL THE FREAKING TIME. Plus, it's kind of my thing to point out that life is fine without our National God.
Also, I actively ignore Star Wars.
Reminds me of an old P. G. Wodehouse story about a guy who is actively not going to an acquaintance's country house for the weekend. He says things like, "Right now I am not having to endure one of Mr. Glossop's interminable stories about the war" and "Now I am not being tormented by their young son Roderick and his inane friends".
I actually tweeted out on Saturday that I thought that it was amazing that I was missing the whole draft! LOL.
Those sound like things that Wooster would say to Jeeves.
It wasn't a Jeeves and Wooster story, but the same sort of thing.
With those names, it sounds like the Jeeves and Wooster expanded universe.
Is there a Shit Bertie Says twitter feed? Why the hell not?
there is, sort of.
"He had just about enough intelligence to open his mouth when he wanted to eat, but certainly no more.” #wodehouse
Or the girlfriend that keeps calling a guy to remind him she's not talking to him.
I don't get it, why do some people pick on Star Wars. I'm not a superfan, but I still enjoy the series.
1. It's hard to create identity out of things one is merely ambivalent about.
2. Reporting bias. People don't make a big deal about how something is just OK, not really all that great. So you hear high praise and high criticism.
3. Feedback loop. Due to #2, people either think that the thing is either over-praised or over-criticized, so they adjust their praise/criticism to adjust for that, and it builds and builds.
Further on #1.
When something hits a level of cultural approval, people will assume that you're with something unless you vociferously oppose it.
So it's necessary to separate oneself from silent assent to the approval.
I noticed this with Scouting. Boy Scouting (BSA) so far has probably* threaded the needle as best as could be hoped for regarding divisive social issues when all types of churches and secular organizations sponsor them. Girl Scouting has definitely fallen on the secular side of many splits. CER had taken a lot of interest in Boy Scout things since before HPR was even in Cubs. From EAR's Girl Scout experience and what I saw of my sister's experience, we thought she'd find more in an alternative group to Girl Scouting, American Heritage Girls (AHG). We discovered that the organization leaned too much the other way, too religious a focus for my tastes, EAR's tastes, and CER's tastes. (This is for a group not directly affiliated with our church -- we've got religious organizations enough through our church that our kids are in. What we wanted was something more like Boy Scouts in focus: "scoutcraft" etc.)
Upon reflection, it makes sense. People that have enough feeling to create an alternative organization aren't going to be the ones that would like a slightly different focus, but feel that the organization is fatally flawed. AHG had used BSA camps in years past (like the one HPR and I went to last summer... I wanted CER to be able to go there because Ponies). But AHG split any affiliation with BSA over BSA's recent attempts to not get pulled into a morass of divisive social issues, so they use a different camp an hour further away.
CER wanted to quit, but we made her finish the year. She's now interested in finding a Venture Post (BSA division for older kids, co-ed) for after she turns 14. I hope we can find something, because then I could potentially take her to Philmont.
*Please, let's not argue this. If anything, take it for the sake of argument.
Meesa hasa no ideeeeeee whysa peepels wooda make fun of da STAAAR wars.
George Lucas' s atrocious writing before that.
There are some really good (read: engaging) novels in the expanded universe.
I'm not sure I know what you're referring to...
Been there - front porch of Hotel Villa Serbelloni on Lake Como, Italy. Combo of snow-covered alps and palms around the lake is probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.
Would you describe it as actually soft and smooth?
I liked Shatterpoint, which is basically Apocalypse Now set in the Star Wars universe.
the Thrawn books by Timothy Zahn were what got it all rolling.
Those are good. I don't remember the Han Solo & Lando Calrissian adventures books well enough to say whether they hold up past age 12 or so.
Dido.
Hard to believe the country of Jamaica didn't ban that episode.
I'm comfortably agnostic about Star Wars; I really enjoyed the original three films and some of the other books as a kid, but Episode I destroyed any need I felt to continue giving George Lucas my attention. I feel the same way about Star Trek in the combined wake of Voyager & J.J. Abrams. BSG is where it's at, baby!
For those who do enjoy Star Wars, I promise you will not be disappointed by The Incomparable Podcast's many episodes about the franchise, especially the two-part reviews of each film. Start with the first one and work your way forward. They're absolute gems.
the Twins are 3.5 games out of first place
Meesa OPtimistica!
Dammit, I forgot to close the bracket in my last LTE.
They are also tied for the second wild card.
This just in. Brie goes surprisingly well with sliced pork chop and homemade sauerkraut on a sammich.
Lost another friend to suicide last night. No idea what to say anymore.
Mental illness is a thing. About all you can do is to share his story and encourage the people you love to care about each other. Maybe someone who needs help will get it as a result.
Also, we need a fuller recognition of both the human and social costs of mental illness. It is a major cost driver in health care, social welfare costs, public safety costs, and correctional costs.
Sorry to hear that.
Very sorry to hear about that.
Wish I had a simple answer. You and your friend's family are in our prayers.
Either, a, they don't think Hicks can adjust to playing corner OF or, b, they don't think Hicks can play in the majors at all. The real question is will Buxton be moved up to AAA?
or (c) they want Hicks to have more than 21 games of relative success at AAA before calling him up again. Dude had such turrible MLB results the last two years that I can understand seasoning him some more.
On the other hand, Rosario has been Not Good at the plate this year. 242/280/379 slash line and 17:5 K:BB in 100 PA at Rochester.
They said they want Hicks to be more patient at the plate and to take walks. Wasn't the rub on him when he was up before that he wouldn't swing the bat? He had a 16% BB percentage in MLB last year. He's at 12.5% so far in AAA this year (while dropping his K% almost 10% versus last year). Rosario has a 5% BB% and a 17% K% so...
Who said that and when? I've always heard they don't think he's aggressive enough, that he lets too many hittable pitches go by.
Appears in calling up Eddie Rosario over Aaron Hicks, Twins want Hicks to keep working on hitting approach, show he is willing to work walks.
But reading through the thread it seems like it's more that they wanted him to swing more, he just tweeted it terribly.
Hicks has eight games in RF and 13 in center this year. He had some time in the corners before this year but it was rare. I would think Buxton will stay in AA unless Arcia's injury proves to last much longer than 15 days.
My guess, for whatever it's worth, is that when/if they call Hicks up, they want it to be to stay, not just for two weeks, and that they're more comfortable with bringing Rosario up to give him a taste of the big leagues, letting him know that it's likely only going to be for a little while. Just a guess, though.
Yes, that makes the most sense. Hicks doesn't need a taste for motivation. Rosario hasn't been there yet and sometimes getting a taste can really motivate them to get back up there for good.
Our aparment application of the place in St. Paul is approved and deposit is down. We'll be needing a bit of furniture, namely a couch and/or chairs for the living room. If anyone has anything they're looking to unload, lemme know. We may be able to help each other out.
I have a lazy boy recliner in need of a home. Still comfy.
RIP Grace Lee Whitney. 85? Unpossible.

Twins put Arcia on DL, pass over Hicks, call up Rosario.
