Minor Details: Games of May 14

Alex Meyer isn't awful, but isn't good as the Red Wings lose in extra innings.  After a slow beginning, Greg Peavey has made two good starts in a row.  Zach Granite continues to hit in a Miracle loss.  A suspended game for Cedar Rapids.

LEHIGH VALLEY 6, ROCHESTER 5 IN ROCHESTER (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer (his third) and two runs.  Jose Martinez was 2-for-5 with a home run.  Eric Fryer was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Tim Stauffer pitched two shutout innings with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Chase D'Arnaud was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Maikel Franco was 2-for-4 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Jason Berken pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.

The game:  Martinez and Rodriguez each homered in a four-run third to give the Red Wings a 5-2 lead.  The IronPigs slowly came back, scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to tie the score 5-5.  The Red Wings were getting at least one baserunner in every inning, but could not dent the plate again, going 1-for-9 with men in scoring position.  D'Arnaud's RBI double in the eleventh brought home the go-ahead run for the IronPigs.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 2-for-5.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-5 with a double.  Danny  Ortiz was 1-for-5.  James Beresford was 1-for-5.  Alex Meyer pitched 6.1 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

CHATTANOOGA 5, BIRMINGHAM 1 IN BIRMINGHAM

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in one.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Mike Gonzales was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Greg Peavey pitched seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and now walks with three strikeouts.  Zack Jones struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Tim Anderson was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Christian Marrero was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The game:  With the Lookouts leading 1-0, Kepler had an RBI double and Adam Brett Walker II delivered a run-scoring triple, leading to a two-run fourth and a 3-0 Lookouts advantage.  The Barons got on the board with one in the sixth, but in the eighth two walks, a Kepler double, and a Gonzales single produce a pair of runs and put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 1-for-5.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-5.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice.

DUNEDIN 6, FORT MYERS 3 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his third.  Zach Granite was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Alex Muren struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Todd Van Steensel struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.

Opposition stars:  Dickie Joe Thon was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Matt Dean was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Justin Shafer pitched five shutout innings, allowing five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  The first six Blue Jays of the game reached base, leaving them with three in and the bases loaded with none out.  They only plated one more that inning, but added two in the second, and that was all they needed.  The Miracle loaded the bases with one out in the third and two out in the sixth but did not score until the seventh, when an RBI single by Alex Swim got them on the board.  Kanzler hit a two-run homer in the ninth but the Miracle did not get another man on base.

Of note:  Swim was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Ryan Eades pitched five innings, giving up six runs on ten hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

PEORIA AT CEDAR RAPIDS

The game was suspended after three and a half innings due to wet grounds.  The Kernels are leading 6-2.  Trey Vavra hit a three-run homer in a four-run second.  The game will be completed as part of a doubleheader on Monday.
