Minor Details: Games of May 23

Kennys Vargas continues to hit, but it's not enough as a fine outing by Tyler Duffey is wasted.  The stars continue to shine in Chattanooga.  Kohl Stewart leads the Miracle to victory.  A Kernel comeback falls short.

NORFOLK 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN NORFOLK

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Eric Farris was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Duffey pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and no walks with six strikeouts.  Casey Fien pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Henry Urrutia was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Nolan Reimold was 2-for-3.  Elih Villanueva pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

The game:  Three singles produced a Tide run in the first and Urrutia's RBI triple made it 2-0 after five.  The Red Wings got a man in scoring position in three of the first four innings but could do nothing with him.  The Red Wings finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth on doubles by Farris and Vargas.  They had men on second and third with two out, but the last four Red Wings were retired.

Of note:  James Beresford was 1-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-4.  Danny Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a double.

CHATTANOOGA 11,  MOBILE 3 IN MOBILE

Batting stars:  Miguel Sano was 3-for-6 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Byron Buxton was 3-for-5 with a triple and a walk, scoring three times.  Adam Brett Walker II was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios pitched six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Jake Reed struck out four in two innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk.  Tim Shibuya pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Alex Glenn was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Sean Jamieson was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Zach Borenstein was 2-for-5 with a run.

The game:  Walker II hit a two-run double that put the Lookouts up 3-0 in the first, but the Bay Bears got two of them right back in the bottom of the first.  It stayed 3-2 until the fifth, when Sano hit a three-run triple-plus-error as part of a four-run inning.  The game was never close again.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 3-for-5 with a walk and three runs.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Max Kepler was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.

FORT MYERS 3, BREVARD COUNTY 1 IN BREVARD COUNTY

Batting star:  Bryan Haar was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Kohl Stewart pitched seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Brandon Peterson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  J. T. Chargois struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Garrett Cooper was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Tristan Archer struck out four in three shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

The game:  Each team scored once in the second.  In the fourth, Haar had an RBI double and later came around to score on a balk to make it 3-1.  The Manatees' only other threat came in the eighth, when they put two runners on with two out.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 0-for-4.  Alex Swim was 1-for-4.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-4 with two runs.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-3.

BELOIT 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 6 IN BELOIT (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Blake Schmit was 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs.  Brett Doe was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Pat Kelly was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Yairo Munoz was 3-for-5 with two home runs, his third and fourth.  Sandber Pimentel was 3-for-5 with a home run (his sixth) and two runs.  James Harris was 1-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a walk, scoring twice.

The game:  Schmit homered in the fifth to tie the score 3-3, but the Snappers scored two in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-3.  It was 6-3 after eight, but Zach Larson's two-run single and a sacrifice fly by Doe tied it 6-6 and sent it to extra innings.  The Kernels had the go-ahead run on third with one out in the tenth, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the inning.  In the bottom of the tenth, four consecutive one-out singles brought home the winning run.

Of note:  Nick Gordon was 1-for-5 with a walk and a run.  Trey Vavra was 2-for-5 with a run.  Max Murphy was 0-for-3 with two walks and a run.  Larson was 1-for-5 with two RBIs.  Keaton Steele struck out six in 4.2 innings, but gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks.
