Minor Details: Games of May 25

Kennys Vargas continues to show there's nothing wrong with his swing.  An offensive explosion for the Kernels.

DURHAM 5, ROCHESTER 4 IN DURHAM

Batting stars:  Danny Ortiz was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a home run (his third) and a walk, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Mark Hamburger struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up only a walk.  Alex Meyer struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Matt Andriese pitched five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Jim Miller pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

The game:  Ortiz hit a two-out two-run double in the first to put the Red Wings up 2-0.  The lead held up until the sixth, when the Bulls scored all five of their runs.  Jason Wheeler had given up only one hit in the first five innings, but the Bulls opened the sixth going single, double, single, single, single, double before he was removed with none out.  Doug Bernier doubled and scored in the eighth and Vargas homered in the ninth, but the Red Wings did not get the tying run on base.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  James Beresford was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 12, BELOIT 3 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Pat Kelly was 3-for-3 with a home run (his third), a double, and a walk, scoring three times and driving in five.  Max Murphy was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, and a walk, scoring three times.  Jorge Fernandez was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and four RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Michael Theofanopoulos struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up four hits.  Randy LeBlanc struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  James Harris was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a double.  Trent Gilbert was 2-for-4 with a run.  Jose Brizuela was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The game:  Harris homered in the first to give the Snappers a 1-0 lead but the Kernels responded with four in the second.  Fernandez hit a three-run homer in the second inning.  It was 6-3 after four, but the Kernels scored three in the fifth, two of them coming on a two-run double by Kelly, to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Tanner English was 1-for-6 with a triple and a run.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-5 with a double and a walk.  Zack Larson was 2-for-6 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  John Curtiss pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
