Minor Details: Games of June 12

A bad day for the Red Wings.  David Hurlbut hurls a gem for the Lookouts.  A ninth-inning run carries the Miracle.  The Kernels take twenty-one innings to lose two games.  Emmanuel Morel brings in the winning runs for the DSL Twins in extra innings.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 13, ROCHESTER 3 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE

Batting stars:  Jose Martinez was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Eric Fryer was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with two runs.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.  Ryan Wheeler pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Rob Refsnyder was 4-for-5 with a home run (his fourth) and a double, scoring twice and driving in four.  Jose Pirela was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring three times and driving in one.  Kyle Roller was 3-for-5 with a home run (his ninth) and two RBIs.

The game:  The RailRiders scored five in the first inning and in was never close again.  Refsnyder hit a three-run homer and Roller a solo shot in the inning.  Just for good measure, they added seven runs in the fifth to go up 12-1.  They had three doubles and four singles in the inning.

Of note:  Danny Santana was 1-for-4.  Danny Ortiz was 0-for-4.  Lester Oliveros started, faced five batters, and retired no one.  He gave up five runs on four hits and a hit batsman.  He was ejected after hitting Austin Romine in the head with a pitch following the back-to-back homers by Refsnyder and Roller.

CHATTANOOGA 1, BIRMINGHAM 0 IN BIRMINGHAM

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  David Hurlbut pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Nick Burdi pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  J. T. Chargois pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Tyler Danish struck out seven in six innings, allowing one run on six hits and four walks.  Tim Anderson was 2-for-4.  Devon Davis struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks.

The game:  The game's lone run scored in the fourth, when Kepler walked and scored from first on a Mike Gonzales double.  The Barons had men on first and third with two out in both the third and the eighth.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-3 with a walk.

FORT MYERS 4, BRADENTON 3 IN BRADENTON

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, driving in three.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Ryan Walker was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Chih-Wei Hu pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Alex Muren struck out three in three innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit.  Todd Van Steensel pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Harold Ramirez was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Edwin Espinal was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Felipe Gonzalez struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing two hits.

The game:  Four walks in the seventh scored a run and put the Miracle up 3-2.  A two-out error was followed by a Ramirez double to tie it 3-3 in the eighth.  Christensen delivered an RBI single with two out in the ninth to drive in the go-ahead run.  The Marauders went down in order in the ninth.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-5.  Alex Swim was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Marcus Knecht was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run.

GREAT LAKES 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--13 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 1-for-6 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Brett Doe was 2-for-4 with two walks.

Pitching stars:  Luke Bard pitched three perfect innings with two strikeouts.  Randy LeBlanc pitched four shutout innings, giving up one hit with two strikeouts.  Jose Velez struck out four in two innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Alex Santana was 2-for-6 with a three-run homer, his second.  Josmar Cordero was 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI.  Robert Fernandez struck out three in 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing only a walk.

The game:  In the second, Murphy hit a two-run triple and scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Kernels a 3-0 lead.  The Loons immediately tied it in the third on a Santana three-run homer.  And there things stood until the thirteenth, when Alex Verdugo led off with a single-plus-error, reaching third, and scored on Cordero's single.  The Kernels went down in order in the bottom of the thirteenth.

Of note:  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-5.  Jorge Fernandez was 1-for-6.  Alex Real was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched four innings, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

GREAT LAKES 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--8 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Pat Kelly was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Keaton Steele struck out eight in 7.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Alex Verdugo was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Spencer Navin was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Derrick Sylvester struck out eleven in five innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.

The game:  The Kernels scored once in the second and the Loons tied it in the fourth.  It stayed 1-1 until the eighth, when Verdugo singled in the go-ahead run and another run scored on an error.  The Kernels got one man on in the bottom of the eighth but did not get the tying run on base.

DSL TWINS 8, DSL RED SOX 6 AT RED SOX (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Francisco Hernandez was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Edwin Franco was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Carlos Suniaga struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Miguel De Jesus pitched three shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Luis Benoit was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Hemerson Serven was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Roniel Raudes pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  The Red Sox scored two in the third to take a 2-1 lead.  It stayed 2-1 until the eighth, when the Twins struck for five.  The Twins had four singles in the inning and also benefited from two walks and an error.  It looked good, but the Red Sox got two in the eighth and two in the ninth to tie it 6-6.  In the eleventh, Morel delivered a two-out two-run triple to put the Twins in the lead to stay.

Of note:  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI.  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Parra was 0-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Jose Ramirez pitched four innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
