Minor Details: Games of July 8

We'll try to get caught up today, but I have a lot of other things to do, too, so we'll see.  A big day for Danny Ortiz.  David Hurlbut pitched well.  Chih-Wei Hu pitched better.  Felix Jorge pitched still better.  The bullpen failed for the E-Twins.  Jermaine Palacios continues to hit.  A walkoff for the DSL Twins.

ROCHESTER 6, BUFFALO 5 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Danny Ortiz was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Jorge Polanco was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Michael Tonkin struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Caleb Thielbar pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Caleb Gindl was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run.  Sean Ochinko was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.  Matt Hague was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  The Red Wings took a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI singles by Wilkin Ramirez and Carlos Paulino.  It stayed 2-0 until the sixth, when four doubles and two walks resulted in a five-run inning for the Bisons and a 5-2 lead.  Ortiz doubled in a run in the sixth and Rodriguez hit an RBI double in the seventh to make it 5-4.  In the ninth, a double, a walk, and a single loaded the bases, another walk brought home the tying run, and Ortiz singled in the winning run.

Of note:  James Beresford was 0-for-2 with three walks and a run.  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-5.  Jose Berrios pitched five shutout innings, but was responsible for most of the damage in the sixth, giving him a line of five innings, five runs, six hits, and three walks with eight strikeouts.

CHATTANOOGA 6, JACKSONVILLE 1 IN JACKSONVILLE (7 INNINGS--RAIN)

Batting stars:  Niko Goodrum was 3-for-3 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching star:  David Hurlbut pitched a 6.2 inning complete game, giving up one run on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Carlos Lopez was 2-for-3 with a home run, his fourth.  David Adams was 2-for-3 with a double.  Blake Logan struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

The game:  Each team scored once in the first, but the Lookouts took control with a three-run second.  Goodrum doubled in one run while two more scored on an error.  Kepler doubled in a two-run fourth to make it 6-1.  The Suns had two on in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, but could not score.

Of note:  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  For some reason, pitcher Tim Shibuya went into the game in right field in the sixth, replacing Kepler.  He did not bat.

FORT MYERS 3, JUPITER 2 IN JUPITER

Batting stars:  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Ryan Walker was 3-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Chih-Wei Hu pitched seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Nick Burdi struck out two in two innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Avery Romero was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Brian Anderson was 2-for-4.  Jorgan Cavanerio pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Vielma singled in a run in the third to give the Miracle a 2-1 lead.  It stayed 2-1 until the eighth, when Vielma singled, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored on two wild pitches.  The Hammerheads scored once in the ninth and had the tying run on first with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4 with two runs.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3 with an RBI.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-4 with a triple.  Ryan Walker was 3-for-4.  Alex Swim was used as a reserve and was 0-for-1.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, BELOIT 1 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Edgar Corcino was 3-for-5 with a grand slam, his second homer.  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Felix Jorge pitched eight shutout innings, giving up six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Jose Brizuela was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Rob Huber struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing two hits.

The game:  Valera had a two-run double in three-run second that put the Kernels up 3-0.  It stayed there until the fifth, when Corcino hit a grand slam in a five-run fifth that put the Kernels in control of the game.  The Snappers did not score until the ninth.

Of note:  Zack Larson was 2-for-3 with a run.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a run.  Max Murphy was 0-for-4 with a run.

KINGSPORT 8, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN KINGSPORT

Batting stars:  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk.

Pitching star:  Miles Nordgren pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Luis Carpio was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Luis Ortega was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Harol Gonzalez pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

The game:  In the sixth, Guzman homered and Wade doubled in a run to give the Twins a 2-1 lead.  It went downhill from there.  Two errors and a walk led to a three-run Mets sixth that gave them a 4-2 lead.  In the eighth, Leon Canelon had a two-run single as part of a four-run inning that put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-4.  Austin Diemer was 0-for-4.

GCL ORIOLES 6, GCL TWINS 3 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Roberto Gonzalez was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Bryant Hayman was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

Pitching star:  Lachlan Wells pitched five innings, giving up six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Frank Crinella was 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Gerrion Grim was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Carlos Diaz was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.

The game:  Robert Molina's two-run single-plus-error put the Twins ahead 2-0 after two.  Grim hit a two-run double in the third to tie it.  It stayed 2-2 through six.  Diaz hit a two-run homer in the seventh to put the Orioles ahead 4-2.  The Twins got one back in the eighth, but Crinella hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4.  Trey Cabbage was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 11, DSL DODGERS 10 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Junior Amarante was 4-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Darling Cuesto was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk.  Emmanuel Morel was 0-for-3 with two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Randolph Perez pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Cristian Santana was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Luis Paz was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk, scoring twice.  Romer Cuadrado was 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in one.

The game:  Trailing 6-3, the Twins got five runs in the fourth to go ahead 8-6.  They had one hit in the inning, which featured three walks, three errors, and two wild pitches.  In the seventh, Paz and Daniel Padilla each hit a two-run homer to put the Dodgers ahead 10-8.  Cuesto homered in the eighth to make it 10-9.  In the ninth, Antonio Tovar's RBI single tied the score and Amarante singled in the winning run.

Of note:  Jean Carlos Arias was 0-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Danny Feliz pitched three innings, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

  1. For some reason, pitcher Tim Shibuya went into the game in right field in the sixth, replacing Kepler.

    I saw I think a tweet that said Kepler had a shoulder injury.

    1. But my question is, why would you use a pitcher? They hadn't made any other substitutions, so their entire bench was available.

      1. Most pitchers were shortstop or position players in HS, so chances are he wasn't THAT out of place... they had a 6-1 lead, it was late in the game, and I wouldn't be surprised if he'd been ragging on coach to let him play in the field sometime.

          1. And the fact is that he doesn't look like that great a prospect, so while you still wouldn't want him getting hurt out there, it's not like if you put Jose Berrios in the outfield.
