Minor Details: Games of August 16

Byron Buxton had a good day in support of David Hurlbut, who made a successful AAA debut.  Max Kepler stays hot.  Big days for Mat Batts and Engelb Vielma.  A walkoff loss for the Kernels.  A walkoff win for the E-Twins.

ROCHESTER 3, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 2 IN ROCHESTER (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Byron Buxton was 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs.  James Beresford was 3-for-5 with a run.  The Red Wings only had two other hits.

Pitching stars:  David Hurlbut, making his AAA debut, pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Alex Meyer struck out four in 4.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks.  Mark Hamburger struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Kyle Roller was 3-for-5 with a triple and a run.  Rob Refsnyder was 2-for-6 with a run.  Kyle Haynes pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  The RailRiders scored a single run in each of the first two innings to go ahead 2-0.  The Red Wings scored once in the fourth and Buxton homered in the fifth to tie it 2-2.  And there things stood until the twelfth.  Jose Martinez led off with a single, went to second on a bunt, and scored on Buxton's single to win the game.

Of note:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-5.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-5.

CHATTANOOGA 11, TENNESSEE 4 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Niko Goodrum was 3-for-5 with a home run (his fourth) and a triple, scoring three times and driving in four.  Max Kepler was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Alex Wimmers struck out three in two perfect innings.  D. J. Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  J. T. Chargois pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Willson Contreras was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jonathan Mota was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Albert Almora was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

The game:  The Smokies took the early lead, getting one in the second and three in the third to go up 4-0.  The Lookouts took over after that.  Goodrum tripled and scored to put them on the board in the bottom of the third.  They took the lead in the fifth, scoring five times.  Their first two batters went out, but then came a single, two walks, and three singles to make the score 6-4.  It was 7-4 after six.  In the seventh, Goodrum hit a two-run homer in a four-run inning to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Levi Michael was 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Jason Wheeler pitched five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 5, CHARLOTTE 1 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting stars:  Engelb Vielma was 4-for-5 with a run.  Tanner Vavra was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  Logan Wade was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Mat Batts struck out nine in eight innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  Todd Van Steensel pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Mike Marjama was 2-for-4 with a home run, his eighth.  Jordan Harrison pitched two shutout innings, allowing two hits.

The game:  Vielma had a two-run single-plus-error in a three-run second that put the Miracle up 3-0.  They added two in the fifth on Jason Kanzler's two-run triple.  The lone Stone Crabs run came on Marjama's homer leading off the seventh.

Of note:  Kanzler was 1-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.

FORT WAYNE 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 6 IN FORT WAYNE (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Austin Diemer was 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Alex Real was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Randy LeBlanc pitched four innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Luke Bard struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Nick Anderson struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Josh VanMeter was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Edwin Moreno was 1-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a walk.  Thomas Dorminy pitched six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  It was 1-0 TinCaps after six, but the Kernels took the lead with a four-run seventh, capped by Valera's two-run double.  Diemer had an RBI triple in the eighth and later came around to score, giving the Kernels a 6-1 lead.  It looked good, but a two-run homer by Trae Santos was followed by Moreno's homer in the ninth to cut the lead to 6-4.  The next two batters went out, but two walks were followed by Luis Tejeda's two-run single to tie the game.  In the tenth, an error, an intentional walk, a wild pitch, and a single by Franmil Reyes ended the game.

Of note:  Sean Miller was 0-for-5.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-3 with two walks.

ELIZABETHTON 6, DANVILLE 5 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Manuel Guzman was 3-for-4 with three runs.  Alex Perez was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.  LaMonte Wade was 0-for-2 with three walks and a run.

Pitching star:  C. K. Irby struck out four in 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Justin Ellison was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his second) and a double.  Kurt Hoekstra was 2-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Joel Morel was 3-for-5 with a double.

The game:  The Braves jumped to an early lead, but Perez had a two-run single in a three-run second that tied the score 3-3.  It stayed 3-3 until the seventh, when an error put the Twins ahead 4-3.  Ellison's two-run homer gave the Braves a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth, but Brian Olson singled home a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie it.  The Braves put men on first and third with one out in the ninth, but a double play ended the inning.  In the bottom of the ninth, a single, a bunt, an intentional walk, and an accidental walk loaded the bases.  A. J. Murray then singled home the winning run.

Of note:  Daniel Kihle was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-3.  Olson was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Miles Nordgren pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks with one strikeout.
