  1. I like brewing with my dad. As a pharmacist, he's very scientific and very precise about it. Feels like were in a low-rent "Breaking Bad" knockoff.

    1. I use a system of two coolers in the kitchen to mash, so when I'm sparging with all the rubber tubing and whatnot, I feel similar. I'm less scientific about it, though, and more process oriented due to my engineering background.

  2. I'm pretty excited for a delivery today - getting an A/V Famicom with a few games to get started. Now that we're in a house with some extra room there is space to set up a tube TV with some older consoles I've kept around in boxes for years and some new additions. My next purchase is going to be an Everdrive for the Famicom and maybe one for a Genesis.

Anyone playing Rare Replay for the Xbox One? I'm determined to beat Battletoads for the first time and it is ridiculous, the rewind feature is essential. I had it as a kid and remember playing it for a long time and now realize I didn't even make it half-way.

    1. I bought a Wii last night off a softball buddy who was looking to declutter his house. Already a great addition.

      1. We set up our TV in the basement and hooked up our old systems up. We now have a NES, a 64, an original Xbox, a Wii, and a 360 attached, which led to fun pictures like this.

        1. I have a NES and SNES at Mom and Dad's. I'm pretty sure that a) we don't have enough inputs on the TV and b) FW would kill me if I hooked them up.

        2. That's awesome. I'll have the Famicom, Sega Genesis, N64, and Sega Saturn available but at this point don't have a setup that will allow all of them to be set up at once. I really want to get an old, metal TV cart that schools used when I was a kid. That way, everything can fit and it can roll out of the main basement area if need be.

My son enjoys playing some 8- and 16-bit games with me but really doesn't care to try the Saturn or N64 (outside of Mario). I don't blame him, that generation hasn't aged particularly well.

          1. The 2D stuff on the Saturn aged pretty well, but it's either absurdly expensive and/or import only. There's a handful of RPGs on the PSX that have aged gracefully, too. N64 probably aged the worst of all those consoles, but at least it has Blast Corps! And I have a thing for janky old racing games which the N64 has a large number of.

        3. My buddy has a NES at his cabin, so I brought up Tecmo Super Bowl and left it there on my last visit.

My family will pull out the N64 once a year for a whole bunch of Mario Kart and Beetle racing.

          1. I know Mario Kart is usually people's go-to old school racing game, but I always loved Crash Team Racing for PS1.

    2. My AV Famicom is probably my favorite retro console purchase. It's just so neat, and the cartridges are the best! Also, FC collecting is more reasonable than NES cartridges (Generally, anyway. The price of Gimmick! makes me want to weep). I'm thinking about buying a Famicom Disk System and a handful of games soon, I have been waffling on one for a while, but there's 3 or 4 things I really want to play on it so I think it's time to dive in.

There's a great site that I buy games from. Prices are generally lower than eBay, and they have buy 3 get 1 free on loose FC cartridges all the time.

      Oh, also, buy Pizza Pop!

      1. Mind sharing a link to the site?

The cartridges are one reason I decided to get a Famicom instead of a NES, I had to get Kirby for the cartridge alone! And I figured with an Everdrive and an adapter, it really didn't matter which one I got.

I was hoping the Sega arcade racers would be a little better than they are on the Saturn, I also have a major soft spot for old racing games.

        1. Here you go: Japan Game Stock.

Some things are more expensive here than eBay (an easy example is the Rockman carts, which you can get a set of 1-6 on eBay for $125ish, and they're significantly more on JGS), but for the most part the prices are fair and reasonable. The aforementioned Rockman cartridges are what convinced me to buy the AV Fami. Kirby was one of the first ones I bought, as was Salamander, which is probably the coolest FC cart. The bonus with doing an FC is having access to the different custom chips and stuff from FC carts. I'm not sure if those things are able to be emulated on an Everdrive? But the soundtrack for the Japanese version of Castlevania III is sooooo much cooler!

      1. Looking at the video, there was a man on base. No balk called because he actually stumbled but still threw the pitch. That's probably why he threw the pitch to avoid a balk.

  3. Someone else can link if desired, but I see a report that JR Smith has resigned with the Cavs for a $1.5M paycut over what he would have made without opting out. Hahahaha!

  4. Hey, Rhu_Ru - how would you like to make $20? I'm about 500 Southwest points short to fly to Austin for free* in October. I can either a) just pay for a ticket, b) Buy 2,000 points for $55 or c) have someone transfer me 2,000 points for $20. If you have extra points laying around, and I know you fly SWA a lot, and wouldn't mind sharing, I'll reimburse you for a transfer.

*$11.20 in 9/11 fees not withstanding.

      1. cheaps comes through in the clutch. Now my flight all totaled is about $32 instead of $400.

  5. I decided today to accept a job offer ("official" on monday), so I am treating myself to a pint of irish stout on nitro with lunch. I might even go all out and have a cask IPA too.

Hmm. That did not work. Not sure how to get the actual url from my flickr app on my phone....
    gotcha covered

Haven't done this in a while, but Topps had virtually no wide action shots of any Twins in this year's set. Schafer's card is the lone exception, but I'm not sure the play is definitive enough to pin down. It's from Series 2, so it can't be from much later than April.

    1. April 2014? or is it from earlier this season?

NM: The twins got rid of the pinstripes for this season. '14 it is.
