      1. I pretty much followed the recipe in this video, except that I chopped and browned an onion in the pan after browning the meat, deglazed with beef stock.

I used about a 2.5 lb chuck roast, cut up and trimmed of much of the fat. I also cut back (considerably) on the ground clove that I've seen in other recipes -- this calls for a quarter teaspoon, which seems about right. Ground clove is pretty powerful, at least when freshly ground.

    1. Sounds delicious. We're having carrot soup with star anise & leftover meatloaf sandwiches for supper tonight.

    2. My lunch was liverwurst sandwich on toast "buttered" with bacon grease and with sautéed wild mushrooms, frozen- harvested yesterday.

      1. I prefer braunschweiger, but still. Yum. With whole-grain mustard, raw onion, and a bit of sharp cheddar on pumpernickel.

        Or your way!

    3. Yup, that's going into the rotation.

Gumbo tonight. I've been working on not chickening out on the roux. I could have gone longer...

      1. Mmm Gumbo. I've been talking about that with the wife for a week or two now. Need to get off the schneid...

Did you do gumbo filé or with okra?

        1. Filé, always. I have a love hate relationship with okra. I love it deep fried and with a spicy dip, but hate it in stews.

Next month will be seafood gumbo. Post to follow.

  1. Excellent review of the Professor's Roommate's book in the NY Times today. The book about Vanderbilt was excellent, so I'll be reading this one soon.

    1. It's been getting some very positive reviews. I am really happy for him.

True story. In between books, income for him can be a real struggle. I could not live that way.

  2. College basketball is an excellent tool for anyone having trouble identifying the sound rubber makes when it hits steel.

  3. The Denver Nuggets are wearing white sleeved jerseys with white or silver numbers. I dont know who any of their players are and they look ugly doing it.

    1. A head injury spotter technically has the power to stop the game and get someone like Keenum checked out, but in such a tight situation, removing him from the game would cause quite the shitstorm.

Jeebus. If that's something that would cause a shitstorm, then f*** this sport.

      1. It's not just football, although, I think the mentality is worse in sports like football and hockey. Still, I just think of all the fans that still want to put Mauer back behind the plate or calling him soft for not coming back sooner from his concussion;

      2. I think that comment is a bit of sarcasm. Deadspin has been pretty clear where they stand on head injuries.
