  1. Sitting in the waiting room at the dentist waiting for the trinket to go in for a root canal. For those of you with even littler ones, I strongly recommend not letting them suck on a blanket to get to sleep.

    1. Yeah, especially once they get some adult teeth. Baby teeth not such a big deal. Hopefully, it will be like the last time I went in for a root canal. The dentist drilled into the tooth and said, "You know what, I think we can just do a filling on this." Basically, if it started to hurt, I would have to go back in and have a root canal done, but it didn't hurt. I think if it's borderline, they tell you that you need a root canal so you're prepared for it instead of surprised with bad news.

      1. Her's isn't borderline, unfortunately. It hurts her quite a bit and you can see the cavity by just looking in her mouth. Shame she didn't get teeth like me.

    2. Oh man. Ours did that every once in a while, but thankfully he appears to have stopped without forcing us to have to take away the blankets.

        1. We totally thought that ours was going to be into pacifiers. Wrong. He spit them all out instantly.

Don't really know about blankets. He doesn't really get to have one very often yet.

          1. I think we waited until at least 18 months, possibly 24 before introducing a blanket. Too scary otherwise.

          2. HPR would wake himself looking for his dropped pacifier. After a few painful nights, we got him to go without.
All three girls had pacifiers until they turned 3. 3rd birthday, they'd throw them away.
We had slowly weaned them down before then. LBR seemed a bit too mature to have them before that birthday, and she'd sneak them, so we "lost" most before then.

    3. Good luck brother. Ours were/are pacifier-dependent, but Kernel transitioned off fairly easily ... We'll see about Niblet. *

      * heh. I couldn't have written def. 2 better myself.

      1. I don't think the pacifier is quite as bad for things, other than alignment, as the blanket. My theory is that anything in her saliva soaked into the blanket and just sat on her teeth all night, making cavities far more likely. The bauble is big on his pacifier, so I'm hoping it won't be as bad.

    4. We got into the room to get the procedure started and right before having to get in the chair she coughed a slightly productive cough, so they cancelled it because the sedative/medication increases mucus production which would have put her at risk of not being able to breath. We get to go back next week now, so woohoo...

          1. It hasn't seemed to bother her as much the past couple of weeks. We've got some numbing stuff that helps if it does flare up again, at least.

    5. I just finished a round of antibiotics to knock down an abscess last week and have to schedule a root canal for sometime this week. I have to find a different place since the one my dentist refers to is out of network.

  2. so, I got a text from The Girl a couple of days ago. It seems that she has somehow cracked the screen on her (~6-month old) phone, despite having it in a protective case (but no front scratch-shield).

anyone got experience or familiarity with Verizon's standard warranty policies? I think I've seen something about 12 months, but have not yet thoroughly checked the paperwork. (it's a Galaxy S6)

    1. looks like damage is not covered. Would have to prove a mfg defect.

so, who has experience getting a screen replaced on a Galaxy? I'm seeing varying prices quoted online ($100-$150, $200) and claims about low-cost (albeit challenging) do-it-yourself replacement ($10-$20 for screen). Also seeing claim that the S6 screen is fused to the digitizer, so that both have to be replaced ($$ even if DIY).

      1. If you're a tinkerer and are handy the screen replacement can be a great challenge. If you're not a tinkerer your time may be more valuable than the cost of having someone else do it for you.

  3. What to do on a holiday? Mrs Runner and I ran errands this morning and then met Runner daughter for lunch (she does not get thus holiday), and now this afternoon we're hitting the suite seats theater for Hail, Caesar . We could have done worse

    1. My holiday has been spent wrangling two sick kids, with doctors appointments to follow this afternoon. Yea. Their school was closed today, so they were going to be home anyway, but fevers today mean they're going to be home tomorrow, too. Double yea. They were also off on Friday as well. Evidently it's not uncommon around here to take both Washington's Birthday and President's Day off.

Good part: This is my week in between semesters, so I can be home with them without missing work. Bad part: I need to be grading finals and getting ready for the upcoming semester this week, and had high hopes of finally finishing a bathroom we've been working on since December.

  4. I'm doing taxes and catching up on some housework but we did our fun stuff yesterday since the wife works today. For Valentine's I took Mrs. Twayn and Younger Daughter to see Hail, Caesar and then out for a dinner at our favorite local pizza joint. We also watched Bridge of Spies on blue-ray on Saturday, so I got a double dose of Coen brothers dialogue this weekend, which is nice.

    1. Taxes here too. The wife's "filing" and maintenance of the checkbook becomes a point of contention at this time every year.

      1. Did my taxes this weekend. I'll be saving the money I owe the feds for the next 2 months and filing at the deadline.

          1. true.

On the other hand, it sure would be nice to, you know, be able to find all of the check registers and carbons so that I could figure out what charitable contributions she made without getting a receipt or filing anything in the file I created for exactly this purpose.

our taxes are reasonably simple, other than the massive PITA that is wading through educational expense/529 clarifications each year. It would be super great if the IRS were a little clearer about the distinctions between what you can claim for getting an American Opportunity Credit and what you can claim against 529 withdrawals (so that you don't generate a whole bunch of taxable income). I struggle with this every year.

If you've been plugging money away into a 529 account for years and years for a kid, there will be earnings on those deposits. The earnings are tax-free to the extent that you can offset them with allowable educational expenses, which include room and board. BUT you can't include room and board in your calculations of Qualified Educational Expenses for AOC purposes, and those expenses are not reported on the Form 1098-T. In the past, Turbotax did not handle these situations very transparently. This year's version appears to be a bit better, or maybe I've just figured out the process a bit more.
