  1. A while back a citizen described how he went about and contacted 5 different auto dealers when shopping for a new car. Can someone provide a link to that comment. Merci beaucoups.

    1. I have a friend who sells cars. He's honest and won't push you into anything. Let me know if you want his contact info

  2. Re: NPR personalities. I'm not sure who I can trust anymore. I don't think D'Wally Psykow-tow is who she says she is.

    1. It sounded like she botched her own name this morning after her story about Como Park High.

      1. D'Wally Psykow-tow

Re: NPR personalities ... this is the first one I haven't been able to place.

            1. Despite the overall whiteness of where I grew up, there were a number of Hmong kids, including a close friend in grades 4-6 (last name Khang). Even so, I apparently didn't encounter the X pronounced as S.

            2. Nope, no Hmong in my district, but I lived on the East Side for five years and have extended family from that part of the world, so I should've thought about it before commenting.

              From the Repository:

              dwah-lhee sy-kow-tao

makes more sense, and also rings a bell.

I'll blame it on the "P" that Zee added to the pronunciation - threw me for a loop.

              1. I'll blame it on the "P"

I may have been embellishing for effect. Though "kow-tao" is how I typed it the first time.

          1. I love that she is Hmong-Texan and not Hmong-American.

That reminds me of King of the Hill. Grandpa got injured fighting for Texas in WWII.

    2. I haven't found anyone in my life I can relate this anecdote to: I can't stand Rob Stein's voice. That weird little lisp of his always takes me away from the story.

      1. There are certain NPR voices that really get in the way of the story (and a few that make me switch off the radio), but there are some I absolutely love: Sylvia Poggioli, Eleanor Beardsley, Robert Krulwich, Nina Totenburg, and the guy with the drawl I'm always confusing with Roy Blount, Jr.

But my two favorite are Andrei Codrescu and Ofeibea Quist-Arcton.

            1. Yeah, I like especially like Eleanor Beardsley and Wade Goodwyn (it's funny that he's pretty much just the Texas correspondent). I'll cop to along "singing along" with Sylvia Poggioli's sign off. Kai Ryssdal just sounds like he'd be cool to hang out with.

One other annoyance: Steve Inskeep is far too much in love with the sound of his own laugh.

              1. Steve Inskeep also can't conduct an interview without interrupting to tell the interviewee there is only twenty seconds left.

He's local, but for some reason I can't stand Euan Kerr.

        1. I loooooove when Nina Totenberg does the voices of the Supreme Court justices during oral arguments.

    1. I heard about this story on MPR (of course) this morning. I was flabbergasted at the stupidity.

        1. Insensitive, certainly. Admittedly, not thinking to look specifically at the race of the victims, I can see how I might miss the significance.

I shall continue my long-standing boycott of Joe's.

  3. Arizona doesn't participate in Daylight Saving Time, except for the portion in the Navajo Nation. Why not?
The Arizona Republic, the newspaper in Phoenix, said it perfectly: "The short answer: The last thing Arizona needs to save is daylight. On a July day when the high is 114 degrees, do you really want the sun hanging around until 8:40 p.m.?"

    That place sounds terrible.

  4. Not sure how many blues fans there are here, but I heard last night that Robert Cray is playing the Medina Ballroom in April (with Corey Stevens). Public ticket sales begin tomorrow morning (I was too late to sign up for today's presale). Anybody been to a show at the Medina? I've never been there, but pretty sure I'm going to this one. RC was the opening act the last time we saw Clapton at the X.

      1. free texted me from The Depot - he scored four as well!
...so we got that going for us.

      1. I got two extra specifically in the event someone here didn't get in. So they're yours if you want them. (Don't have to decide now either)

        1. I will take one for sure.

My friend, Marty (who went to Merle with us) says he is 95% but will let me know for sure on Monday. Does that work for you?

I will be working in Highland Park on Wednesday the 23rd if you want me to hand over $. Or I can mail you a check.

    1. Like Ben said, I got 4. I promised one to him so I have two available. I have other non-citizens who may be interested so we should coordinate who's selling to whom.

      1. O.k. It looks like Citizens have been covered. Although I think AMR is off the grid right now. Unless I hear otherwise I'm going to hit up a couple of friends for my two extras.

  5. Whew, I got offered the job I was interviewing for the last couple of weeks, so I'm glad all of that waiting and wondering is over. I haven't accepted it yet, but will most certainly do so on Monday. It'll shave 40+ miles off of my daily driving and get me out of this increasingly insecure position I'm in now. And I no longer have to worry about going on a work trip in two weeks which would have caused me to miss our curling playdowns!

    1. I just wouldn't pay too much attention to accumulated stats (total HRs, etc.) in the spring because Park has got to be leading all of major leagues in at-bats this spring just helping him to get adjusted.

      1. I wouldn't pay too much attention to any stats in the spring, especially this early into it. Still, I'd rather see Park doing well than doing poorly.

        1. My only question: has he cut down on bat flips like he said he was going to? Because I really don't want that to actually happen.

            1. Boooo!

The Nationals have ST in Florida. Someone needs to get him an audience with Bryce Harper.

        2. Come on, say he's hitting 50+ HR this year. It's spring! We need some irrational exuberance!

          1. Jeff A plans on limiting irrational exuberance to spring? This year will be different.

    1. I don't want the current regime to be responsible for putting the pieces around him.

      TRUE DAT!

  6. Random thing I noticed while going down a baseball-reference rabbit hole: If you combined the statistics for Julio Franco's age 47 and 48 seasons, he had 8 stolen bases against 2 caught steals.

  7. El Nino is striking early this season. Trey had his second game of the season rained out tonight. It actually was called off hours before the game and before the rain even started at my house, but there's a line of rainstorms slowly heading this way and it's raining heavily now and blowing pretty hard as well. If El Nino is as bad as they've been predicting, it could be a crazy season trying to get in all these games. And Junior's games haven't even started yet and his field (he plays on a full-size field) is even worse at collecting puddles in the infield and taking a long time to dry out.

    1. Yep, we got that one, too; surprisingly strong wind and rain. I'm not used to seeing that out here.

Some of my colleagues were supposed to do an event at a school with some telescopes tonight, but they canceled early in the week. El Nino is certainly good for the drought, not so great for baseball and astronomy.

    1. How many have seen one from the ground? I was fortunate to see a total eclipse in Winnipeg in 1979, and it's definitely a highlight of my life. Next July there will be one sweeping across central N. America that won't be far from St. Louis, and you really should make an effort to see it.

  8. Ricky Rubio hits a 3 (!!!) at the the virtual buzzer (!!!!) to beat OKC (!!!!!) on the road (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

    what?
