April 8, 2016: Hammerin’

On this day in 1974, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 715th career home run. We've come a long ways since days when white fans would issue death threats against a black man for hitting too many home runs.

  1. AMR, I hope there wasn't a message for me hidden in the box of tri-color rotini that was partially spilled on the sidewalk on the north side of Third Avenue on the block where our paths overlap. I didn't pick it up.

  2. The Milkmaid got the job she wanted. It's a huge bump in pay (and they're paying for her to move here). It's been such a long, gradual process to getting this job I'm not sure how much it's really sinking in.

    1. I'm glad things are finally falling into place. I'm sure it'll be nice to have the family in one place again.

      1. Yeah, man. It's easier to be away now that Skim and Sour Cream are older, but I'm starting to reach the limit here. Sour Cream said she silently cried at school a couple of days ago because she missed me so much. She's still only eight, and she's having by far the toughest time of any of us.

    2. Sounds like it's about time for another WGOM:TNG caucus/playdate.
Pepper, know any more playgrounds slated for demolition?

      1. Heh.

The splash pads near me are going to be closed this summer due to a need for water conservation--does that count?

Otherwise there's the new Windom Park playground where we had a WGOM:TNG caucus last fall. It's the replacement for a demolished playground!

    3. The official offer sheet came in now, is well north of the Milkmaid's highest asking price, and there's also a $3000 signing bonus.

One Citizen texted me "it's a new world you're living in." I can't say it any clearer than that.

      1. Here's to minimum salary ranges and high cost of living indexes? Congratulations!

    4. Having the family back together and extra scratch in the pocket?
      Priceless.

      Congrats to you all.

  3. One of the bright spots for the Twins this season is that Escobar is on pace to hit 216 doubles. That would be a record, right? I was too lazy to look it up.

      1. Unfortunately next Thursday is out, that's our Pub Night with the car club. What's with the Thursdays, I thought you were usually in town on Mondays.

        1. There's a big meeting every Friday @ 1PM and they're the guys paying for my trips, so now I'm doing the end of the week instead of the beginning.

I could also do Wednesday night instead, but I was kinda hoping to do Superman v. Batman at Midtowne that night. I'm okay to swap nights, unless you need the excuse to skip getting together. I have no feelings to hurt either way 😉

    1. By a fair margin

        1. Probably yes. Ballparks built now are all vaguely similar in dimensions and I'm guessing that didn't start with Camden.

Plus, if you ignore 1933, the 30s bottomed out at 4.81 runs/game and averaged 4.9. The 20s were similar but a bit lower.

Andrew Clem's ballpark diagrams really drive this home. One page on his site groups ballparks by class. The Twins' homes in Minnesota have been in three classes: Modern [sic] 20th century ballparks; dual-use "cookie-cutter" cloned stadiums, domes, etc.; and Postmodern stadiums.

Even though he divides the Modern & Dual-use and Neoclassical & Postmodern ballparks as classes, you can see these have more to do with the exterior architecture and other facets of the building than the layout of the playing field.

  4. Anybody recently sell and buy a home at the same time and worked with an amazing Realtor? Mine just retired.

    1. I haven't, but I'll send you our agent we picked after I asked something similar a couple of months ago (no selling on our part). Mag's when you'll are ready I think you'll like him.

      1. Right now I'm on a "5 acres and tiny house" kick. Next week, I'll probably swing back into "Nice little place in town"

          1. I did jokingly bring up opening a European branch of the company and volunteering to do so.

    2. I could recommend this lady, though I think they (she and husband sell and buy, respectively) primarily work in the NW Metro.

  5. My sister-in-law is a realtor and doing pretty well at it. Before she went into real estate she did sales and customer service for Xerox for about 25 years. I could arrange an introduction if you're interested.

  6. for hitting too many home runs

No kidding. These days you can receive death threats for damn near any accomplishment or failing. Thanks internet!

    1. I don't know about death threats, but didn't hitting too many home runs sort of get Barry Bonds blackballed by the owners?

    1. Ooof.
When I saw the video last night, I thought he would have a broken ankle/lower leg. That collision was nasty.

    2. It's almost like playing lumbering oafs out of position in the infield might not be a great idea

  7. So, at the pub, we started live music last night. Local guitar/singer. Packed bar. Fun. For those few in the area, we are running live music on Thursday nights going forward. As of Wednesday, it's been a year since we opened. Cannot believe it's been a year. What a crazy, crazy, crazy year. Open a restaurant, deal with a nasty little blood clot in my leg, head a hockey association, try to get another rink built. Luckily, my kids graduate out to high school hockey next year, so my volunteerism is about to be cut down drastically. It was a little humbling but I got a little attention the past few weeks. Very awkward., but cool to get some free publicity, but you don't do these things expecting credit. Weird getting congratulated for just pitching in to help.

  8. No hitter alert. Dodger rookie has no-hit the Gigantes through 6 in his major league debut.

    1. Walked Pagan to lead off the 8th and gets pulled. It IS raining, and it's only a 2-0 game. But still....

      1. And the reliever gives up a two-run donger to break up the non-no and tie the game. Hah.

        1. Manager follows it up by smartly getting between his pitcher and the ump to avoid the pitcher getting ejected. Gets ejected himself.

          What a weird game.
