Friday Music Day: New Music

Having a kid hasn't slashed as much time from my hobbies as I might have expected so far (subject to change, obviously). I still play a fair number of video games, I will watch baseball, and I still listen to quite a bit of music.

The one thing I don't do nearly as much anymore is find NEW music. I almost always did that late at night after Linds went to sleep. Anymore, I'm just as tired as she is, so around the time I'd be perusing blogs and whatnot, I'm falling asleep on the couch, instead.

As a result, I haven't really heard a lot so far this year. The Operators album is pretty sweet, the new Mitski song is good. New M83 is deeply cheesy and odd....yeah.

Any recs?

Also, drop your ten.

    3. Maybe I just haven't played this game in a while, but I don't remember where this song plays.
    4. This is a blues band from the cities that played a local bar. My brother-in-law, Linds and I just happened to be there, and it was entertaining enough to stay. As the night went on, my BiL and I got inebriated to really get into the music. I spent $25 and bought all of the bands' CDs, he insisted to the lead singer between songs that they should play at his wedding reception. Having listened to most of their songs about pain, heartbreak, the fleeting nature of love and copious amounts of cocaine, it's probably for the best that he ended up forgetting their number at the bar.

  2. Funny, even with the Poissonier's arrival I've already bought & listened to more new music in the first four months this year than I did all of last year. Not sure why that is, but it is.

    3. Vinyl-only Download bonus track. The only song of hers I can think of where she mentions being married.
"Baby, I've become such an unbelievable whore,
All the things that I picture myself killing you for,
Are the same things I've done twice as much to you to get even.
Cause that's what worried women do, yes it is.
They fool around and say, 'Maybe it's okay if it's just revenge.'
But revenge never added up did it?"

    7. Such peppy lyrics!
    "When you're dead,
    You will be survived
By a total absence of surprise,
    By the wistful sighs
    And dejected shrugging
    Of all the losers
    You were f---ing.

    ...

    It's yours."

I bought new music in the past few weeks, probably more than I bought all of last year:
Sturgill's new album (having been in the Navy, and loving his music, and having new(ish) kids ... this may never come out of my car).
Blurryface by Twenty One Pilots - contains only the third song* my daughter has specifically requested unprompted - "Ride"
Better Nature by Silversun Pickups - On a whole, I prefer their last release (Neck of the Woods) to this one, but a few really solid songs and a pretty complete album.
What Went Down by Foals - still waiting on delivery of the disc, but have heard much of this via streaming and really enjoy the sound.

Randomly came across an episode of Deadliest Catch and heard a folk/bluegrass song from a band I'd never heard of that caught grabbed my attention - Clover Tune by Mandolin Orange:

    1. Better Nature by Silversun Pickups

I did pick this one up (mostly because it was in the Google Play store for 99 cents). I sort of prefer their older stuff, but there's some good songs on it.

      1. I also "sort of prefer their older stuff," but we're going to see them (with Foals & Joywave) next week, so I wanted to check this album out ahead of time. I often find that it's attending a concert that entices me to purchase music.

        1. Ooh, you'll have to tell me how that is. I think they'd be good live (and Foals and Joywave sound like solid opening acts).

  5. I need to add some new music soon because I just noticed some:

Jan St. Werner has a new album out (the follow-up to last year's Miscontinuum Album that was my #2 of 2015).

Minneapolis's Andrew Broder has resurrected his Fog project and released a new album. Probably won't have anything as transcendent as "Pneumonia" or "Check Fraud (Vocal Version)", but little ever is.

I listened to a few minutes of the Horse Lords, and I'm intrigued.

I'm always curious to see where Andy Stott and Katy B are taking things next.
I haven't given the new Tim Hecker much attention.
And I should get that Sturgill, too.

  6. I've been doing a good job of listening to newer stuff this year, but I haven't been great at keeping track of it all! So, here's a handful of things I am quite fond of.

    - Human Performance by Parquet Courts is awesome. YMMV if you haven't liked their other work, but I liked their older stuff and love this.
    - Psychopomp by Japanese Breakfast is excellent, maybe my favorite thing this year so far? It's about the death of her mom, and has beautiful, dissonant production.
    - Three Men and a Baby by Mike and the Melvins is a collaboration with Mike Kunka from godheadSilo, which was finally released now despite being mostly recorded in the late 90s. Sounds like '90s Melvins.
    - Slow Forever by Cobalt is a killer metal album. It's so sludgy and angry. I've listened to it a bunch at work.
    - The self-titled album by Heron Oblivion is awesome psyche-folk, which isn't too surprising given the pedigree of the band members.

And yeah, the new Sturgill is excellent. nibs, I'll send you my playlist on Spotify where I add every 2016 album I'm interested in listening to, in case you want to poke around!

  8. New albums I've given a listen to in the past few weeks:
    Ray LaMontagne
    Weezer
    Jayhawks
Sturgill Simpson (big fan of this)

The Joy Formidable is in the queue.

      1. I'm a casual fan of his - mostly background music that scratches a certain itch. That said, I've spent a lot more time with this album. It's in my everyday mix at the moment.
