I'm going to hijack this thread a little to announce...

WGOM SUMMER MIX 2016!

Over the next couple weeks we'll take submissions. Rules are pretty simple:

  • Nominate up to 3 songs in a Spoiler.
  • Nominate songs that fall under the category of "Summer" (you can take that as subjectively as you'd like)
  • Like the All-Star game, everyone gets at least one song. Your first nominated song is (most likely) juiced in to be picked.
  • The same song nominated by multiple people will also most likely be automatically included.
  • Whatever other rules I make up along the way.

I'm shooting to have this done by the solstice, so let's get those picks in!

*I’ve always appreciated Chris’s voice, but his rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” is heartbreaking. It should be noted, this was recorded in Sept. 2015, not done as a hasty homage in response to the Purple One’s passing … makes it more endearing somehow.

    7. I remember the first time I heard this song. "What's my sex?" sounded so titillatingly taboo. Then George Michael came out with the scandalous lead single from his debut solo album a month or two later, and, well, it didn't measure up to that.
    8. Curtis Mayfield cover

    NOTES:
    - "Kingsized" by Dressy Bessy and "Shake It Out" by Florence + The Machine were the last two cuts.
    - I am making a version for my sister who is moving to Baltimore that replaces the first song with "Good Morning Baltimore."
    - A large number of these songs are tributes to my recently deceased nephew, who used music to connect with the world. Lots of them are just songs he liked (like "Only The Good Die Young"), and not message songs. Some... are message songs. That new Mason Jennings one is a huge emotional punch, but it's perfect too.
    - I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this mix, since I knew it was going to have lots of tributes and message songs. I try to avoid that, and just go for fun, sing-along stuff. I didn't get the sing-along part as much this year, but I have really been enjoying the mix. It hit the sweet spot that I needed it to. I also wasn't sure how others would feel about it, but so far my wife and kids have absolutely loved it, which is always nice.
