  1. spring break blues: I am planning to drive my parents to Tucson, via LA to visit The Boy, the weekend of March 25. We planned to get through most of the LA area after dinner on the 25th. But ain't no rooms to be had, it seems, anywhere in the Redlands/San Bernadino/Riverside/Beamont area, or even as far out as Palm Desert. WTF?

        1. My only remembrance of either of those towns was stopping for gas and feeling like I had opened the door to the oven. If either have any claim to fame, it would be their daily high temps.

          1. Spring is the best time to come through here. We get the onshore air flow, so it stays relatively cool here most of the time now through end of June, when the air flow will switch to blowing offshore and we'll get the heat from the desert. It's actually pretty warm this week (upper 80s for highs), but it looks like it will be in the 60s and 70s in another week or two. As far as hotels, not sure. Could be a problem with people coming to SoCal for Spring Break. Disneyland gets real busy this time of year.

            1. San Bernadino and Redlands seems pretty far out from Anaheim.

We ended up with a reservation at a Hampton in Norco. My dad (unbeknownst to me) had also made a reservation at a Holiday Inn in West Covina. Since we are driving on to Tucson on Sunday, I opted for the further east location.

          2. Looks like this is too late to help, but Indio is a nice place, at least what I've seen. My only real experience there is driving through to get to the polo grounds where Coachella is held, but it looks a whole lot like Palm Springs: lots of golf courses and rich people.

    1. I see the real problem. That's NASCAR weekend at the speedway in Fontana. You're not going to find much of anything in the Inland Empire available, especially this late.

      1. luckily, we found something in Norco, so not too horribly far from our target area. Thanks for clearing up what was going on with the hotel market.

  2. My daughter had a closing shift at Target last night. She had to open this morning. And she lost an hour to Daylight Savings Time in between. In German, this would be a gefürchtetshortenklopen.

  3. WBC Update!

    Pool C:     COL 4 - 1 CAN        USA 5 - 7 DOM
    Today:      DOM 3 - 2 COL (In progress)    USA-CAN
    If Wins:
DOM and USA: DOM and USA advance
DOM and CAN: DOM advances, USA-CAN-COL 3-way tie*
COL and USA: CAN eliminated, USA-DOM-COL 3-way tie*
COL and CAN: COL and DOM advance.

    Pool D:    VEN 11 - 10 ITA (10 Innings)    PUR 9 - 4 MEX
    Today:      ITA-PUR        MEX-VEN
    If Wins:
ITA and MEX: ITA and PUR advance
ITA and VEN: MEX eliminated, ITA-PUR-VEN 3-way tie*.
PUR and MEX: PUR advances, ITA-VEN-MEX 3-way tie*
PUR and VEN: PUR and VEN advance.

*I don't know how 3-way ties are settled.

    Pool E:    JAP 8 - 6 NED (11 Innings)
The winning run and the one following it in the 11th were on placed on base to begin the inning. Sac Bunt and a single scored them both.
They were counted as unearned runs against the pitcher. They were the last two batters in the 10th. They got credit in the box score with the runs.
Netherlands didn't capitalize on a the same opportunity in the bottom of the inning.

    1. I just turned it on and you forgot an update: Carlos Beltran dyed his beard blonde and it looks hilarious.

    2. Pool C: DOM 10 - 3 COL
      Dominican Republic Advances.
If USA beats Canada: USA advances, Canada and Colombia eliminated.
If Canada beats USA: USA-CAN-COL 3-way tie (???) I assume the announcers know.

Pool D: ITA 3 - 9 PUR (In progress, but top of the ninth 2 outs. If that holds...)
      Puerto Rico Advances
If Venezuela beats Mexico: Venezuela advances, Italy and Mexico eliminated.
If Mexico beats Venezuela: VEN-MEX-ITA 3-way tie (???)

  4. Carlos Peña with a remarkably clear headed take on these extra inning rules re: bunting vs. Expected Run Tables.

His basic thought being that experience and the old school mindset would have had him bunting, but that you can't argue with the numbers, and giving away outs when you need multiple runs doesn't add up when you look at the numbers.

    More analysts like this, please.
