Minor Details: Games of July 18

A big day for Nik Turley.  The Miracle gives one away.  A strong debut by Ryley Widell.  Brian Olson and Roni Tapia lead the GCL Twins as Daniel Palka struggles early on with his rehab.  A solid performance by Michael  Montero.

ROCHESTER 3, CHARLOTTE 1 IN ROCHESTER

Rymer Liriano homered in the fourth inning to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.  The Red Wings took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Mitch Garver walked, Tommy Field doubled, and Niko Goodrum tripled.  They added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.

Nik Turley struck out ten in 6.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.  His ERA is 2.49 with 60 strikeouts in 47 innings.  John Curtiss struck out three in a scoreless inning to make his ERA 2.61 with a WHIP of 0.68 and 16 strikeouts in 10.1 innings.  Field was 2-for-4 with a double.

BRADENTON 3, FORT MYERS 1 IN BRADENTON

Jordan George singled in a run in the first and Mitchell Kranson singled in a run in the fourth to tie it 1-1.  The Marauders went into the lead to stay in the fifth when two errors led to two runs on just one hit.  The Miracle did not get a man past first until the ninth, when Zander Weil hit a two-out double.

Brady Anderson pitched five innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Alex Muren pitched two shutout innings to drop his ERA to 1.69.  Sam Clay pitched a scoreless inning to make his ERA 1.48.  Sean Miller was 2-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS

BRISTOL 9, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN ELIZABETHTON

Three doubles produced two first-inning runs for the Pirates.  Shane Carrier had a two-run single in a three-run bottom of the first that put the Twins up 3-2.  That was as good as it would get, though.  Edison Lantigua had a two-run double in the fourth to give Bristol a 4-3 lead and a four-run eighth, highlighted by a three-run homer by Nelson Jorge, put the game out of reach.

Moises Gomez pitched four innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Ryley Widell made his professional debut by striking out three in 2.1 scoreless innings.  Jose Miranda was 2-for-5 and is batting .300.  Wander Javier was also 2-for-5.  Andrew Bechtold was 1-for-4 and is batting .333.  Mark Contreras was 1-for-4 and is batting .322.  Matt Albanese was 1-for-4 and is batting .318.  Carrier was 1-for-4 and is batting .306.

GCL TWINS 11, GCL RAYS 5 AT TWINS (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

The Rays scored one in the first, but the Twins scored three in the bottom of the first to take the lead.  Benjamin Rodriguez singled home the tying run and Brian Olson hit a two-run double to put the Twins ahead.  The Rays scored two in the fifth to tie it 3-3, but the Twins scored four in the bottom of the fifth to go into the lead to stay.  Roni Tapia had a two-run double in the inning.  The Twins built the lead to 11-3 before the Rays scored two in the ninth.

Brusdar Graterol had started before the game was suspended, going one-third of an inning and giving up one run on one hit.  Jordan Balazovic started when the game was resumed.  He pitched four innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Matt Jones pitched 3.2 scoreless innings.  Jean Carlos Arias was 3-for-5.  Ricky De La Torre was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Tapia was 2-for-5 with a home run and a double, driving in four.  Olson was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs and is batting .333.  Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .340.  Royce Lewis was 1-for-4 with a walk and is batting .318.  Alex Robles was 1-for-5 and is batting .313.  Daniel Palka was 0-for-4 and is now hitless in seven at-bats on a rehab assignment.

GCL TWINS AT GCL RAYS (SCHEDULED GAME--SUSPENDED IN THE TOP OF THE SECOND)

Kerby Camacho doubled home a run just before the game was suspended, giving the Twins a 1-0 lead with one out in the top of the second.

DSL TWINS 6, DSL ROCKIES 1 AT ROCKIES

Mariano Calcano doubled home a run in the first, Ruben Santana had a two-run single in the second, and Felix Reyes delivered an RBI single in the fourth to give the Twins a 4-0 lead.  The Rockies got on the board in the sixth, but the Twins scored two in the seventh to secure the victory.

Michael Montero pitched six innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.35 with a WHIP of 0.91.  Robert Gutierrez struck out four in three shutout innings.  Alberoni Nunez was 3-for-3 with a triple and is batting .350.  Santana was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and is batting .378.  Estamy Urena was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and three runs to make his average .337.

  1. Any chance Turley gets another shot with the big club, or is he just a AAAA player? Those first three outings up here were ... not good.

    1. I'm pretty skeptical about Turley--he's 27 and this is the first time he's had any success above AA. On the other hand, the Twins remain desperate for starters, and I guess I'd as soon see him get another shot as run Methuselah Bartolo Colon out there again.
