Jonathan Rodriguez and the Lookouts bullpen are the heroes as Chattanooga wins the Southern League Co-Championship. Cedar Rapids gets a big lead early to stay alive in the Midwest League playoffs.
CHATTANOOGA 3, MONTGOMERY 2 IN CHATTANOOGA
The Lookouts did not lead until the last batter of the game. Joe McCarthy led off the game with a home run to give the Biscuits a 1-0 lead. Andy Wilkins homered leading off the second to tie it 1-1. With two out and none on in the fourth, Dalton Kelly doubled and scored on a Nick Ciuffo single to put Montgomery up 2-1. It remained 2-1 until the bottom of the ninth, with Chattanooga not even putting a man into scoring position. In the bottom of the ninth, however, LaMonte Wade led off with a single and Jonathan Rodriguez followed with a two-run walkoff home run that gave the Lookouts the win and the Southern League Co-Championship.
Dietrich Enns pitched four innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks with one strikeout. He threw 49 pitches. The bullpen did a tremendous job, with three pitchers combining for no runs one two hits and a walk over five innings. Randy LeBlanc pitched two shutout innings, Todd Van Steensel pitched a scoreless inning, and Anthony McIver pitched two shutout innings. Wade was 3-for-4. Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a home run. Chattanooga wins the series 3-2 and wins the Southern League Co-Championship along with Pensacola.
CEDAR RAPIDS 7, QUAD CITIES 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Shane Carrier hit a two-run homer in a three-run second that put the Kernels ahead 3-0. Travis Blankenhorn led off the fourth with a home run to make it 4-0 and Cedar Rapids got three more in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead. The River Bandits got all four of their runs in the seventh, as three walks were followed by three singles and another walk. They had the bases loaded with two out, but a fly out ended the inning and they would not come close to catching up after that.
Charlie Barnes pitched five shutout innings, giving up five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Colton Davis pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and Hector Lujan pitched a scoreless inning. Caleb Hamilton was 3-for-4 with three doubles. Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4 with a double. Aaron Whitefield was 2-for-4. Blankenhorn was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk. Carrier was 1-for-4 with a home run.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
Chattanooga won their best-of-five series with Montgomery 3-2 and won the Southern League Co-Championship with Pensacola. The league championship series was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma.
Cedar Rapids was tied in their best-of-three series with Quad Cities 1-1. The deciding game would be played September 11.
